  • How to Make AI Art in 2023 (Detailed Tutorial)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is blazing hot right now, and there are nearly endless tools available to create content and images. Each tool has its own features and benefits, so deciding which to learn can be confusing. We’ve been trailblazers of late, periodically releasing tutorials on how to use the various AI platforms. In this post, we will teach you how to make AI art on three amazing platforms: Jasper, Midjourney, and the new kid on the block, Leonardo AI.

    Let’s get started.

    What is AI Art?

    Midjourney AI art

    image created with Midjourney

AI art, or generative art, is specifically created using artificial intelligence. Unlike digital art, created by a human with artistic skills, AI art is generated with a text prompt and a series of highly-trained computers. A finished image results from generative AI algorithms trained on huge datasets of images and large language models (LLMs) that can translate your text into a finished piece of art.

How Do AI Art Generators Work?

    What is AI

image created with Midjourney / Photoshop AI

AI art generators use technologies such as deep learning algorithms and generative adversarial networks (GANs) to produce images from text. A user will input a series of words, usually descriptive, to create the image. The AI then uses the data it was trained on to generate a picture that matches the user’s description.

During training, neural networks analyze large amounts of photos and learn about their characteristics, including shapes, styles, colors, and other information. As a result of that training, the AI program can copy those colors, textures, subjects, and even famous artist styles. Some AI art generators are better than others primarily because they were trained on a larger data set. Other factors are also considered, such as the type of AI used.

Currently, two primary open-source AI programs exist: DALL-E by OpenAI (the makers of ChatGPT) and Stable Diffusion. However, other programs, like Midjourney or Adobe’s Firefly, utilize a closed-source system.

    How to Make AI Art

With the popularity of AI Art generators exploding at the speed of light, there are plenty of ways to create your masterpiece. However, a few offer the best features: Jasper, Midjourney, and Leonardo AI. We’ll walk you through the steps of creating art for each platform, then offer a few best practices that can be applied to any AI program you choose.

    Make AI Art with Jasper

    Jasper AI Art

Built on the DALL-E 2 OpenAI model, Jasper is a multi-functional AI software. It’s used to create art or text, including blog posts, templates, and images. It excels at creating landscapes, product shots, and food images, so it’s an excellent tool for bloggers. If you need to create images of vehicles, people, or animals, Midjourney is a better option which we’ll touch on later.

    The Free Form Tool

You can use the Free Form tool, which allows you to input text, then select from different parameters, including mood, medium, inspiration, style, and keywords. Most people will use these more common settings, but you can be as descriptive as you’d like in the text input field. Let’s break down the options available with the Free Form option in Jasper.

    1. Free Form: Allows you to choose your own settings to create AI art.
    2. Text prompt: Enter your descriptive text here so that Jasper knows the type of image you want to create.
    3. Mood: Choose from different mood settings, including calm, exciting, fun, gloomy, happy, and whimsical. Alternatively, you can leave this set to “none.”
    4. Medium: You can choose different artistic mediums, including acrylic paint, collage, ink, mixed media, oil paint, photography, or watercolor.
    5. Inspiration: If you want to assign a specific artist style, choose this option. Presets include Warhol, Money, Norman Rockwell, Picasso, Dali, and Van Gogh.
    6. Style: Various art styles, including abstract, anime, art deco, digital, pop art, and surrealism.
    7. Keywords: These are used to add descriptive words such as 8K resolution, ambient light, black & white, close-up, flat lighting, full face portrait, global illumination, highly-detailed, masterpiece, photorealistic, and realistic.
    8. Create Art: Once all settings are chosen, click this button to generate your image.

    Jasper free form tools

Let’s create our first piece using the Free Form tool. For the text, we’ll use the following prompt: superhero on a busy, wet New York street after dark.

Here are the styling parameters used:

    • Mood: Gloomy
    • Medium: Photography
    • Inspiration: None
    • Style: Surrealism
    • Keywords: Ambient light

    Jasper free form result

As you can see, Jasper did a pretty good job translating our simple text prompt into an image.

    The Templates Tool

The other way to create art in Jasper is by using pre-defined templates. These templates have all pre-configured parameters, so you only need to input a text prompt.

    Jasper templates

Right now, there are 10 template presets:

    • Food Photography
    • Ink Art
    • News Graphic
    • Product Closeups
    • Realistic Animals
    • Realistic Person
    • Stock Photography
    • Storybook Illustration
    • Travel Photography
    • Wallpaper

As mentioned, Jasper struggles with animals and people, so we’ll stick to something simple, such as product close-ups. Click on it to begin.

    product closeup template

Next, we’ll need to add a text prompt (1) and click the create art button (2).

    generate templated art

For the prompt, use heart of the ocean pendant. As you can see, Jasper took our simple text prompt and transformed it into 4 images depicting our prompt.

    Jasper product images

    Saving Jasper Images

Once your images are created, you can do a few things, including saving your vision to a campaign, sharing it to Twitter, Facebook, or Reddit, renaming it, or downloading it.

    Jasper download options

If you choose to download your images, you can choose from three different resolutions:

      • 512×512 (1x)
      • 1024×1024 (2x)
      • 2048×2048 (4x)

Currently, Jasper only provides square images for download, but later in this post, we’ll offer a solution to alter the sizes.

    Make AI Art with Midjourney

    MidJourney AI Art Generator

Midjourney has grown to be one of the most popular AI art generators available today. We don’t fully understand how Midjoureny works, primarily because it’s a closed-source software. However, we do know that it uses two machine-learning technologies: large language and diffusion models. The LLM gives Midjoureny insight into what you’re trying to create. The diffusion model works by gradually adding noise through its dataset of images. From there, it generates an image by reversing the noise to reveal a brand-new image based on your text prompt.

    The Midjourney Interface

Unlike other AI art generators with proprietary interfaces, Midjourney uses a Discord server as its home base. While this may sound a bit cumbersome, it’s pretty intuitive when you get the hang of it. This tutorial assumes that you know how to sign up and get started. If not, check out our post on how to create art with Midjourney to get you up to speed.

However, we’ll give you a brief overview of the interface:

    1. Discord channels: The channels you’ve joined will show up here.
    2. Midjourney Bot: Select the Midjourney icon to enter the channel.
    3. Image feed: Any images you create will appear here.
    4. Text prompt: To create a text prompt, type /imagine. To upload a source image, click the + icon.

    Midjourney interface

After typing /imagine, click enter on your keyboard. That will bring up the prompt textbox, so you can begin typing in your text.

Creating Your First AI Art Piece in Midjourney

Let’s create a new image. Type /imagine, then press enter. The prompt box will look like this:

    make AI art

Next, we’ll click into the textbox directly after the word prompt. We’ll use the same prompt from our Jasper artwork: superhero on a busy, wet New York street after dark. Now your text box should appear like this:

    Midjourney prompt example

Click enter on your keyboard to start the image creation process. In under a minute, Midjourney will produce 4 images measuring 1024×1024 each. You’ll notice a series of buttons underneath the images: U1-U4 (1) and V1-V4 (2). These are used to upscale or create variations in the images.

    upscaling and variations

The ordering for the images is as follows: top left (1), top right (2), bottom left (3), and bottom right (4).

    image orientation

While these images look incredible initially, let’s tweak them a bit. First, click the U3 button to upscale the 3rd image. MJ will start improving the appearance by adding fine details to it. When the process is finished, click the Zoom Out 2x button. This will zoom the image out two times the original and provide four more variations.

    zoom out

As you can see, while similar to the original, the new images have more details surrounding the superhero. You can click on the images to bring up a closer look, then click the Open in Browser link to view them at full resolution. You can right-click to download them from there or head back to Midjourney to upscale your favorite.

    Using Advanced Parameters

Now that you understand the interface and are comfortable making AI art with Midjourney, let’s explore some advanced parameters you can use to enhance your images further. There are a ton of parameters available with Midjourney, so we won’t cover them all here. However, we will show you a few that will definitely up your game.

Let’s try our original prompt, but add some details: superhero on a busy, wet New York street after dark, DSLR, blue –ar 2:3 –no people, deformities, animals. We’ve added some descriptors separated with commas, changed the aspect ratio, and a negative prompt to omit any people, deformities, or animals in the photo. Additionally, we’ve told MJ to give our images an aspect ratio of 2:3. Without the –ar command, Midjourney will generate images in a 1:1 ratio. With the latest version of MJ, you can use any aspect ratio you want, which is great when creating images for projects where a square won’t cut it. Alternatively, you can use the zoom and pan feature to achieve similar results.

    Here are the images:

    make AI art

Now let’s try the remix feature. Remix allows you to keep the original prompt but alter it by adding more details. This is a great tool for keeping an image you love but expanding on it with additional information. To activate remix mode, type in / to bring up Midjourney’s settings.

    midjourney settings

To activate remix, type /prefer remix, then hit enter. Now, when you click one of the variation buttons (V1-4), you can change your original prompt to create four new images.

Make AI Art with Leonardo AI

    Leonardo AI art

Our next AI art generator, Leonardo AI, is a relative newcomer but is making waves in the AI world thanks to its Stable Diffusion bones. It was originally designed as a tool for game developers to generate game development assets, but it has many more uses. It’s trained on an extensive selection of models, but it allows users to prepare their own AI models, making it a favorite amongst creators.

You’ll need to sign up for access to get started with Leonardo. The process is simple and only takes a few minutes to complete. Start by navigating to the Leonardo website, then click Get Instant Access.

    access Leonardo AI

If you haven’t yet signed up for Leonardo, you must be whitelisted. If you have, click the Yes, I’m Whitelisted button to log in. Otherwise, enter your name and email address, then click the count me in button.

    Leonardo signup

Next, click the Launch App button in the top right corner.

    launch app

Next, you’ll pick a username, choose your interests, toggle the not safe for work (NSFW) on, and click the next button.

    Understanding the Leonardo AI Interface

Leonardo offers one of the most slick interfaces of any AI art generator. All tools are accessible and easy to understand. Leonardo is free to use, with 150 credits available per day to create images. As a general rule, one credit = 1 image. So, if you generate four images, it will cost four credits. However, the amount of credit needed to create an image also depends on the image’s dimensions and the model used.

There are several ways to interact with the Leonardo community within the interface, along with three user tools: AI image generation, AI Canvas, and texture generation, with the last two still in testing. However, they are free to try out.

    Leonardo user tools

In this tutorial, we will concentrate on images, so start by clicking the AI image generation tab.

    Leonardo Tools

There are plenty of settings to get familiar with within Leonardo:

    1. Credits: Depicts the number of credits remaining for image generation.
    2. Number of images: Select how many images to generate.
    3. Alchemy: This is the newest feature of Leonardo. When enabled, you’ll have the option for high-resolution (1.5 to 2x resolution increase), contrast boost, and resonance, which adds detail but can make images quite busy.
    4. Expanded Domain: When enabled, this tool expands the creative range of the image. When disabled, images are likely to be high quality with reduced prompt adherence.
    5. Prompt Magic: Available in V2 and V3 (beta), this tool adds prompt adherence and output but requires more credits to create images.
    6. High Contrast: Adds more contrast but tends to make for more moody images.
    7. Prompt Magic Strength: Toggle to adjust the strength of Prompt Magic.
    8. Public Images: Choose where to make images visible to the public. Disabling requires a paid plan.
    9. Input Dimensions: Choose from 512×768, 768×512,1024×758, or 768×1024.
    10. Aspect Ratio: 1:1, 2:3, 3:2, 3:4, 4:3, 16:9, and 9:16.
    11. Guidance Scale: How strongly to weigh the prompt.
    12. ControlNet: Influence your art with uploaded images (paid plan only).
    13. Tiling: Create tiled textures or backgrounds.
    14. Image Prompt: Use an image as input.
    15. Advanced Settings: Choose to use a fixed seed
    16. Text prompt: Input text here to generate an image.
    17. Model Switcher: Choose between DreamShaper v7, Absolute Reality v1.6 Leonardo Diffusion, RPG 4.0, or 3D animation style
    18. Dynamic Style Selector: Choose from anime, creative, dynamic, environment, general, illustration, photography, raytraced, 3D render, Sketch B/W, Sketch color, and none.
    19. Negative Prompt: Toggle on or off to omit keywords in image output
    20. Generate: Use to generate artwork after inserting text.
    21. Image Generation: Use to type in a prompt for image output.
    22. Prompt Generation: Reverse prompt for uploading images to turn them into descriptive text.

    Leonardo tool overview

Creating Your First AI Art Piece in Leonardo

Let’s use the same superhero prompt we’ve used for the other two AI programs to see what Leonardo is made of. Enter superhero on a busy, wet New York street after dark, keep the settings at default, and click the Generate button.

    enter text prompt

Depending on the settings, Leonardo can take up to several minutes to generate results. That said, the results are amazing.

    Leonardo results

You can click on one of the photos to bring up a lightbox to preview the results. Within the lightbox, you’ll notice a few icons underneath the image. These tools allow you to delete (1), download (2), unzoom (3), remove the background (4), smooth upscale (5), or crisp upscale (6) your image.

    Leonardo image tools

The unzoom tool reduces the subject’s size in your image. Select your favorite from the group to test it out on our superhero image, and click the unzoom button in the toolbar.

    unzoom image

Once complete, click the dropdown menu labeled original image and choose unzoomed image.

    make AI art

Try using other tools on the same image to enhance it further. Our image is more digital in this example, so we’ll choose crisp upscaling since it’s suited for digital art, 3D renders, and photos. Here’s the result:

    upscaled image

Leonardo does a pretty good job with just a few words. It’ll be interesting to see how it evolves during beta testing, but they are off to a great start.

Best Practices for Making AI Art

Now that we’ve given you a few ways to make AI art, there are a few best practices to follow. These aren’t program specific, so they can be applied to any AI art generator program you use.

    Craft a Good Prompt

Writing an AI prompt is very different from writing a book report. In this instance, less is more. Try to be descriptive instead of wordy. AI tends to get overwhelmed when analyzing too many words. Keep your prompts primarily to nouns and adjectives for the best results.

Take a look at the images below. The image on the left was created with this prompt: Assassin’s Creed character. Alternatively, the image on the right was created with this prompt: Assassin’s Creed character, video game style, sharp and detailed, fine grain, blue and green glow, sharp focus, cinematic lighting, studio photography.

    Midjourney prompt example

    Combine Platforms

A unique way to use AI art generators is by combining them to get better results. Most AI programs create images no larger than 1024 pixels and many outputs at a 1:1 ratio (square). That’s great if you post to Instagram, but what if you want to use your creations as a background or supporting images on your blog? A great way to combat that is by combining two platforms. For example, we created this image in Leonardo AI, then imported it into Photoshop. We extended the image on the left using generative fill to make it wider. If you’d like to learn more about using Photoshop AI, check out our detailed tutorial on the blog.

    Experiment with Different Art Styles

Lastly, experimenting with different artistic styles is an excellent way to create interesting output. Try combining artists with mediums, and add color and texture descriptors. If using Midjourney, remember to use the aspect ratio parameter (–ar) to make your art look like a painting.

  • WordPress Tutorial for Beginners: Step by Step Guide (2023)

WordPress is one of the world’s most popular content management systems (CMS). With over 44% of the internet built on it, WordPress allows users of any skill level to create a website quickly. There’s no intensive coding to learn; rather, it works much like old word processors. In this WordPress for beginners guide, we will explore the benefits of using WordPress, provide a step-by-step guide to its dashboard, and walk you through creating pages and taking your site live.

    Let’s dive in.

    What is WordPress?

    WordPress.org

WordPress got its start way back in the 90s as a blogging platform. Since then, it has evolved into a complex CMS capable of building any website, from a membership site to a forum to an online store. WordPress comes in two iterations: .com and .org. While the core platform is the same, there are quite a few differences. The main difference between the two is how they are hosted. With .org, it’s considered a self-hosted platform, which means you’ll need to purchase a separate hosting plan to use it. Alternatively, the .com version of WordPress is an all-in-one platform with built-in hosting.

In this guide, we’ll focus on .org rather than .com primarily because of its extra benefits.

The Benefits of Building a Website with WordPress

There are plenty of reasons to love WordPress. First and foremost, it’s free. Well, sort of. The platform is entirely free, but hidden costs include hosting, a domain, plugins, and a theme, which can add up quickly. However, cost concerns are overshadowed by how easy it is to learn WordPress. It’s relatively straightforward once you get past the learning curve, and if you get stuck, tons of tutorials and documentation are available from hundreds of sources.

Another benefit of WordPress is how easy it is to customize. Whether creating a blog, ecommerce site, or a huge online community, a wide range of themes and plugins are available to help you craft a unique browsing experience for your visitors. WordPress is for beginners, so you can easily change the layout, colors, fonts, and other design aspects. If you’re a seasoned developer, you can use custom code snippets and webhooks to make WordPress function any way you want.

As your website grows, WordPress can handle the additional traffic and additional content like a champ. Plus, it’s SEO-friendly, meaning it’s optimized for search engines, which helps your website rank higher in search results ranking pages (SERPs) and attract more organic traffic.

    Setting Up Your Hosting Plan

Before we dive into the details of the WordPress dashboard, we’d be remiss if we didn’t explain the importance of picking a good hosting provider. Choosing the right hosting partner is essential to your website’s success. In fact, it can make or break it. You want your web host to be fast, reliable, scalable, and secure. Plus, it needs to fit within your budget. That may seem like a tall order, but plenty of amazing WordPress hosts are out there, and we recommend a perfect choice for anyone: SiteGround.

    SiteGround WordPress hosting

SiteGround offers three plans which appeal to WordPress beginners and experts. It’ll fit within any budget, with prices ranging from $15 – $40 monthly. SiteGround runs specials often, so there’s an excellent chance of getting a killer deal. It’s more than just affordable, though. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck with SiteGround. With features like free emails, SSL, CDN, and migration, you’ll have all the tools to keep your website running smoothly.

They are strict on security, too. They offer one of the best security packages in the business, with a web application firewall (WAF) keeping nasty hackers away. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about malware, DDoS attacks, or other security issues.

    Setting Up WordPress

In the following steps, we’ll instruct you on how to install WordPress, explore the tools within the dashboard, and walk you through the steps to create content, style your site, and push it live. Once you complete these steps, you’ll see why WordPress is perfect for beginners.

    Step 1: Installing WordPress

There are a few ways to install WordPress, including using a hosting provider, manually installing it yourself, or locally using Local by Flywheel or MAMP Pro. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to install WordPress using SiteGround’s Site Tools dashboard. If you’d like to learn other ways to install WordPress, read our definitive guide.

After signing up for a SiteGround account, you can easily install WordPress in just a few clicks. Start by clicking the set up site button at your screen’s top center.

    install WordPress

Next, choose whether to set up your site on a new, existing, or temporary domain. Select temporary domain, then click continue.

    choose temporary domain

SiteGround will assign a temporary domain to your WordPress install. To proceed, click continue.

    temporary domain

    Next, click start new website.

    start new website

    Choose WordPress.

    Choose WordPress

The next step allows you to create your login credentials. This is how you’ll log in to your WordPress dashboard when working on your site. Be sure to write down or save your login information for reference. Click continue to proceed to the next step.

    WordPress for beginners

Finally, click the finish button to install WordPress.

    finish setup

You have two choices in accessing the WordPress dashboard. Through SiteGround, you can click on the log in admin button.

Another way to log in to WordPress is through the CMS by navigating to www.yoursite.com/wp-admin in your browser. Be sure to replace www.yoursite.com with your unique domain.

Step 2: WordPress for Beginners – the Dashboard

Upon logging in for the first time, you’ll notice the WordPress toolbar on the left-hand side of the screen. It contains all the tools and settings you’ll need to begin building your site. The main dashboard screen contains quick links for viewing or managing pages, editing the design of your site, useful links, and WordPress-related blog posts.

    WordPress dashboard

The next tab, Updates, allows you to review any plugins, themes, or core files that need to be updated. You need to keep the software updated for functionality and security. Otherwise, your site could fall victim to hackers, or at the very least, break. When embarking on updating plugins, themes, or WordPress core, be sure to make a backup of your website in case you counter any issues.

    WordPress updates

    Posts

The next tab is for posts. Here you can create new posts or edit existing ones. You can also set up your blog’s categories and tags, which is great for keeping your content organized, helps with SEO and makes it easy for your users to find what they are looking for.

    WordPress posts

    Media

WordPress comes with its own media library, where you can add and edit images for your website.

    WordPress media

    Pages

The next set of tools allows you to add pages to your website. Although pages are created much like posts, there are some differences. These pages will appear in the main navigation, allowing visitors to browse your content easily. Another difference is that posts enable categories and tags, whereas pages do not.

    WordPress pages

    Comments

The next setting for WordPress is comments. When you publish posts on your website, WordPress automatically provides a comment section to each post. Your site’s visitors can add remarks to your posts, providing interest for other readers and an opportunity for you to boost engagement. However, comments are only beneficial if you take the necessary steps to moderate them effectively.

    WordPress comments

    Appearance

Some of the most beneficial tools in WordPress are contained within the Appearance tab. Here you can install themes, customize them, add widgets to display important information, create navigation menus, and more. Depending on which theme you choose to use, these tools will vary. If using a full site editing block theme like Twenty Twenty-Three, you are limited to themes and editor. Premium WordPress themes, such as Divi, generally have more options, including the ability to edit your theme’s files.

    WordPress appearance

    Plugins

WordPress offers extendability of its platform through the use of plugins. They allow you to add functionality, such as chatting with visitors, tracking your site’s performance, or hundreds of other tasks. The plugins tab reveals a list of plugins currently installed (1) on your website. You can view, manage, or delete plugins as needed. The Add New (2) option enables you to search for and install new plugins available in the WordPress repository or install new ones in a few clicks. Depending on the theme you have installed, a plugin editor option allows developers to make coding changes to activated plugins.

    WordPress plugins

    Users

The all users section of the WordPress dashboard allows you to manage your site’s users. You can add, edit, or delete users and specify their roles and permissions. The profile option lets you edit each user’s gravatar image, bio, and contact information. A quick tip: users can also be extended with membership plugins that enable you to restrict content based on membership level.

    WordPress users

    Tools

The tools section of the dashboard offer features to manage and maintain your site. You can browse available tools, import or export WP posts, pages, and media through an XML file, monitor your site’s security and performance, and export or erase users’ personal data to maintain GDPR compliance.

    Settings

The WordPress settings section allows you to set your site’s title and tagline, set a home page, set default media sizes, set privacy, and more. These settings are too complex to go into here, so we’ve linked some helpful articles below to walk you through the steps.

Step 3: WordPress for Beginners – Themes

A WordPress theme is your website’s face. When a potential customer (or reader) lands on your site, you want them to find the information they’re looking for and be engaged visually. That’s why finding the best WordPress theme for your overall needs is important. Once you find the perfect companion, there are two ways to install your new theme. You can search for and install a free theme from the WordPress directory or upload a premium theme, such as Divi.

Start by navigating to Appearance > Themes in the WordPress dashboard. Click on Add New Theme.

    add new theme

When using SiteGround, you’ll be offered a choice from recommended themes (1), browsing for WP directory themes (2), or uploading a theme (3). Depending on your hosting provider, those options may appear different but function similarly. If you wish to search for a theme by keyword, you can enter search terms into the search bar (4).

    choosing WordPress theme

Once you select your choice, click the install button.

    install WordPress theme

When the screen refreshes, click the activate button to make your theme live.

    activate theme

Step 4: WordPress for Beginners – Plugins

The next step in the process is installing some plugins. How many you need or what they will do depends on the niche you’re going for. Thousands of plugins are available through the WordPress repository and third-party vendors, such as the Divi Marketplace, so the sky is the limit.

Every website should have a few crucial plugins in place to ensure the safety and security of its customers. That’s why there is an essential list of plugins that will give you everything you need for your WordPress website on our blog.

    Installing a WordPress Plugin

Similar to themes, there are two ways to install a plugin: searching within WordPress or uploading a premium theme. First, navigate to Plugins > Add New.

    add new plugin

The steps to installing a plugin from the WP directory are similar to installing a theme. Search or browse for the plugin of your choice, then click install to download the plugin.

    wordpress for beginners

Click the upload plugin tab to upload a plugin, then choose file.

    upload plugin

We’ll choose the Divi Builder plugin from our computer and upload it to WordPress. Once uploaded, click install now.

    install plugin

To complete the installation, activate the plugin.

Step 5: WordPress for Beginners – Adding Content

Now that our theme and plugins are installed, we can add content. We’ll need to concentrate on a few areas: posts, pages, and media.

    Add a Post to WordPress

When creating posts in WordPress, you can add content using the Gutenberg block editor or use one of many page builder plugins, such as Divi.

Here’s a quick overview to show you how to create posts in WordPress:

Click the Add New button to add a new post.

    add new post

Next, you’ll give your post a title. Click on it and add the text.

    add title

To add content, click the plus icon at the top left of the screen (1) or in the page editor (2).

    wordpress for beginners

Once you’ve added content, assign it to a category (1), add any relevant tags (2), then click the publish button to make your post live (3).

    Publish WordPress post

    Add a Page to WordPress

To add a new page to your site, navigate to Pages > Add New.

    add WordPress page

As with posts, give your page a title (1) and add content (2).

    wordpress for beginners

Once all content has been added, click publish to make your page live.

    publish page

Step 6: WordPress for Beginners – Customization

Before you take your site live, there are a few last-minute details that you should take care of, including adding any custom CSS, configuring SEO, adding social media, and configuring your theme’s settings. These options will vary depending on the theme installed.

    Adding Custom CSS

You can add custom CSS to style different elements of your website. Depending on the theme, there are a few places to add your snippets. The first way is through the WordPress customizer. More basic themes will offer this option in Appearance > Customize. For premium themes like Divi, you can add custom CSS in Divi > Theme Options.

    Divi Theme options

    Auto-Update Plugins

WordPress has built-in functionality that allows you to turn on automatic plugin updates. The downside to this is encountering an issue during a plugin update. You might not know what went wrong if you aren’t handling updates yourself. Using an activity log plugin will give you more clarity into what went wrong so you can troubleshoot the issue easier.

To enable auto-updates, navigate to the WordPress dashboard’s plugins section. Click enable auto-updates on any plugin you’d like to update.

    Configure Your SEO

One of the most important last steps before launching your website is configuring its SEO settings. Using an SEO plugin such as Rank Math is an excellent option. It offers a step-by-step process that guides you in achieving better SEO scores using helpful tips and suggestions.

    Rank Math settings

Add a Site Title and Tagline

Your site’s title is used to help visitors identify the website they are browsing. The tagline is a short description of your website. It’s best to use a unique title and tagline rather than repeating the title, as it provides a more accurate depiction of what your website is about. To change these, navigate to Settings > General. From there, input your desired title and tagline, then save your changes.

    WordPress site title

    WordPress Reading Settings

There are two important things that you should do here, including setting a home page (1) and ensuring the Discourage search engines from indexing this site checkbox is unchecked (2). You can show your latest posts on the home page or choose a static post or page. When the discourage checkbox is ticked, search engines block your site from being indexed, so you’ll want to leave that unchecked before launching. Save your changes when finished (3).

    WordPress reading settings

    Configure Theme Settings

Before taking your site live, you want to represent your business properly. Add your logo, social media accounts, color, and fonts. Every theme is different; most allow you to complete these tasks in their theme settings. Using Divi, navigate to Divi > Theme Options. Here, you can add all necessary branding elements and make other necessary changes. Check out our documentation for tips on how to use Divi’s theme options.

    Divi options

    Back Up Your Site

The last and most important step before pushing your site live is to back up your website. By making a backup, you’ll preserve your site’s files in case of a misstep in the launch process. Most managed hosting providers, such as SiteGround and Cloudways, offer backups in their hosting plans. However, depending on the host, you might need to install a good backup plugin.

Step 7: WordPress for Beginners – Taking Your Website Live

The last step in the process is to take your website live. Since we built our site on a temporary domain using SiteGround, you’ll need to add a domain first. If you built your site in a development environment, there are different steps to take.

Regardless of your hosting provider, there are a few items to check once your site is live:

    1. Conduct a speed test for your website, and make any necessary speed enhancements.
    2. Test all forms. If you are having issues, you may need to install an SMTP plugin.
    3. Make a post-launch backup of your site to ensure the most recent iteration is secured.
    4. Secure your website with an SSL certificate. If using SiteGround, follow these steps.
    5. Submit your XML sitemap to Google.
    6. Double-check all SEO metadata.
    7. Set up analytics and integrate it into your website using an analytics plugin.

In this post, we’ll show you how to make a WordPress website, including purchasing a domain and hosting to designing and launching your site. So, let’s dive in.

    What is WordPress?

    what is WordPress

Originally created as a blogging platform in the 1990s, WordPress has evolved into a versatile CMS that can be used to build various types of websites, including membership sites, forums, learning management systems (LMS), ecommerce sites, and more. With its user-friendly interface, extensive theme and plugin options, and versatility, WordPress gives users the control they need to bring their website to life. Whether you’re a beginner or a tech-savvy web developer, WordPress offers a user-friendly and scalable solution for creating and maintaining your online presence.

    Why Choose WordPress?

Aside from its versatility, customization options, and user-friendly interface, WordPress has a large following. With over 44% of the internet built on it, there are hundreds of reputable developers providing tips and tricks almost daily. Plus, WordPress is free to use. That said, there are hidden costs, such as hosting, plugins, and a domain. Additionally, new WordPress users will have the support they need to learn WordPress.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

When creating a new WordPress website, you’ll need a few things to get the process going, including a domain, web hosting, and determining the site’s structure. Let’s take a deeper look into the steps needed to be successful.

    Purchase a Domain Name

Before considering where your website will live or its content, you must decide on the perfect domain name, you’ll want it to stay true to your brand, so ensure that you’re researching the best domain names for your business.

Additionally, consider which top-level domain (TLD) extension you’d like to use, whether it be .com or something else. For most people, .com makes the most sense due to its recognizability and trustworthiness. TLDs are an important part of the selection process for several reasons, including SEO.

After you’ve decided on your domain name, you’ll need to purchase it. You can do this through a hosting provider or using a good domain name registrar, such as Namecheap. The process isn’t difficult and is a crucial first step. However, it is generally advised to refrain from purchasing your domain from a hosting provider since it can complicate matters if you switch hosts for your website. Therefore, we recommend keeping the two separate to retain greater control over your domain.

    Purchase Hosting

Another important step is purchasing a WordPress hosting plan for your website. You’ll want to arm yourself with information before making a final decision. First, learn about the different hosting types available to determine which is best for your unique situation.

Next, decide which host aligns best with your needs. You’ll want to choose one that fits your budget and has the most features. Good hosting providers will guarantee at least 99% uptime, take care of security patches and updates, and provide freebies such as SSL, emails, backups, staging sites, and good security.

A rock-solid option that includes all of these features is SiteGround. Their hosting plans are optimized for WordPress and include benefits such as fantastic support and affordable prices. For newcomers, SiteGround’s StartUp plan is an excellent jumping-off point. With 10 GB of storage, freebies such as an SSL, CDN, business email, migration, staging, and more, you’ll have everything you need to get started for under $15 a month. As an added bonus, based on our own testing, it’s also the fastest WordPress hosting you can get.

    Planning Your WordPress Structure

Before setting out to build your website, it’s important to plan the structure of your site. Consider the pages you want to include, such as an about page, services or product pages, a blog, contact information, and any other relevant pages. By mapping out the pages in advance, you’ll provide visitors with a well-organized and easy-to-navigate website.

Additionally, consider the content you need for each page, including text, images, videos, or other elements such as social media feeds. By outlining your content, you can write good SEO copy, create videos, images, and other elements. Taking the time to do this the right way gives you an excellent shot at boosting your position in the search engine ranking pages (SERPs) and provides a seamless user experience for your visitors.

    Step 1: Install WordPress

The first step to creating your masterpiece is by installing WordPress. This can be accomplished in several ways. If you opted for a VPS or dedicated hosting provider, you’ll likely need to install WordPress on your own. If you chose a managed hosting company, the steps to install WordPress are quite different. For example, using SiteGround, you can install WordPress in just a few clicks. This is the method we plan to use in this tutorial. Check out our in-depth post, How to Install WordPress, if you’re looking for tips on other installation methods.

SiteGround provides a simple way to install WordPress. Once you set up your account, you’ll be directed to your account dashboard. Click the Start New Website button to install it.

    start a new WordPress website

Next, choose whether to install WordPress on a new, existing, or temporary domain. We’ll build our new site on a temporary domain so we can design and perfect it before pushing it live.

    choose temporary domain

When the screen refreshes, you’ll notice you’ve been assigned a temporary domain for your website. Proceed by clicking the continue button.

    temporary domain

    Next, click Start New Website.

    start new website

Then choose WordPress as the application.

    Choose WordPress

For the installation details, provide your email address, create a password (or generate a strong one), then click continue. Be sure to save your login information, as this is how you’ll log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.

    how to host a website

Click the finish button to install WordPress.

    finish setup

Step 2: Choose Your WordPress Theme

A WordPress theme allows you to change how your website looks to visitors. You can customize colors, the layout, fonts, and other design elements to match your branding or style. There are two types of themes available, including free and premium themes. Free themes are available through the WordPress directory. Premium themes are offered by third-party developers, like the makers of Divi, and usually provide excellent features such as no-code page builders, full site editing capabilities, and premade layouts.

To view available free themes, navigate to Appearance > Themes.

    add WordPress theme

Click the Add New Theme button to add a new theme.

    add new theme

From here, you can search for themes (1), use one of SiteGround’s recommendations (2), browse the WordPress directory (3), or upload a premium theme (4).

    theme install options

If you prefer to start with a free theme, click browse the WordPress directory, peruse the available options, then click the install button once you’ve made a selection.

    install free theme

For this tutorial, we’ll use our favorite premium theme, Divi. Click on the upload theme tab to upload a theme, then click choose file to upload your zipped WordPress theme file.

    upload WordPress theme

Finally, click Install Now to install your WordPress theme.

    install WordPress theme

Click the activate button to make your theme live on your site.

    Activate theme

    Step 3: Add Your Pages

Now that your theme is installed and activated, we’ll create our pages. We’ll create a home, about, services, blog, and contact page for our site. This is a basic setup for most starter sites. We won’t add any content; we’ll just set up the page structure to create our navigation in the next step.

Creating your first page is simple. Navigate to Pages > Add New in the WordPress dashboard.

    add new WordPress page

Every new WordPress installation comes standard with two pages: privacy policy and sample pages. We’ll leave those alone and add a new home page to our site. To add a new page, click the Add New button on the top left of the page.

how to make a wordpress website

Next, give your page a title (1) and click publish (2) to create the page.

    Publish WordPress page

Click the WordPress logo at the top left of the page to return to the pages section in WordPress.

    WordPress pages

To add more pages, repeat the process above until all your pages are created.

Step 4: Set Up Your Navigation

The next step is to set up the navigation for our site. Let’s start by setting up our home page in WordPress settings. Navigate to Settings > Reading (1), click the static page radio and choose your home page (2), tick the checkbox to discourage search engines from indexing your site (3), and save the changes (4).

    Setting WordPress home page

Note: It’s a good idea to discourage indexing while building your website. It keeps unwanted traffic from discovering you before your site is ready for prime time.

Now, we’ll set up our main navigation for the site. Head to Appearance > Menus (1). Give your menu a name (2), tick the Primary Menu checkbox (3), then click create menu (4).

    create WordPress menu

Next, click the View All tab (1) and select the pages we just created (2), then click Add to Menu (3).

    add pages to menu

Once your pages are added, you can click and drag them to change their order (1). When satisfied with their placement, click the save menu button (2).

    save WordPress menu

Step 5: Build Your First Page

Creating your home page is the next and possibly most important step when learning how to make a WordPress website. The home page serves as a window into your business’s identity. It should reflect what your business is about, along with supporting content.

As a general rule, your home page should contain all of the information a new visitor should see, including:

    • Your logo
    • Navigation
    • A headline
    • Sub-headline
    • Images
    • Calls to action (CTA)
    • Text content (at least 300 words)
    • Footer
    • Social proof (optional)
    • Video content (optional)
    • An eye-catching design (a must)

When building your page, there are several ways to add content. You can use WordPress’s default editor, Gutenberg, or a page builder like the Divi Builder. Since we chose Divi as our theme, we can add elements to our home page using Divi’s Visual Builder, a no-code front-end builder that allows you to view your design in real time. Divi offers more than 320 full layout packs with over 2300 individual pages, making building your WordPress website a breeze.

Building a WordPress Page Using Divi

To showcase its ease, we’ll walk you through importing a layout into your home page using Divi. Head back to Pages in the WordPress dashboard. Next, click on home within your site’s pages.

    edit WordPress home page

Next, click Edit With The Divi Builder.

Once the screen refreshes, you can tour the Visual Builder or start building your page. Select start building.

    start building with Divi

Next, select choose a premade layout.

    browse layouts

Select the marketing layout pack (or another one of your choice here).

    Divi marketing layout

    Then select the home layout.

    marketing home page

Finally, select use this layout to insert the design into your home page.

From there, you can hover over any module to reveal the settings. Click the gear icon to edit any module.

Building a WordPress Page Using Gutenberg

Using WordPress’s native Gutenberg editor is quite simple. To add content, you can choose from various blocks, such as rows, text, images, videos, social icons, and more, to construct your pages. Start by clicking the + icon to add a block to your page.

    adding content with Gutenberg

In addition to singular blocks, you can create reusable blocks or block patterns for use throughout your website.

Once you’ve added all content to your page, you can publish it by clicking the update button.

Page Checklist: What To Do Before Publishing

Before you can publish your page, there are a few essential things to consider, including:

    • Check your page’s responsiveness: Ensure that all content on your page is optimized for all screen sizes.
    • Look for placeholder content: Ensure you’ve replaced all placeholder text and images.
    • Use alt tags: Every image on your page should contain an alt tag.
    • Check for misspellings: Use an integrated browser spell check or a service like Grammarly to ensure your content is spelled correctly and flows well.
    • Configure SEO: Ensure that SEO best practices are being used. Make sure there is a keyword assigned and fill out the meta box (title, URL, meta description)

Step 6: Modify Your Headers and Footer (if Needed)

If you use a full site editing theme, you can customize headers and footers for your site. For example, you can create any number of custom templates using Divi’s Theme Builder. Alternatively, a block theme such as GeneratePress allows you to edit permanent sections of your site through full site editing.

To create a new header or footer in Divi, navigate to Divi > Theme Builder.

    Divi Theme builder

    Next, click Add Global Header.

    add global header

Finally, select Build Global Header to launch the Visual Builder.

    Build global header

You can use a premade header and footer pack, or use one of Divi’s 200 modules to easily create a header (or footer) for your website.

    Step 7: Install Plugins

Now that your content is in place, you must decide which plugins to use. Generally speaking, there are several essential WordPress plugins that you should include on your site to help with various aspects, including SEO, security, and caching. Other optional plugins, such as social media, affiliate marketing, or live chat, are worth consideration. Since WordPress is so popular, there are thousands of plugin choices. This can be overwhelming for newcomers, so here is a breakdown of some essential plugins you will need for your WordPress website.

    • SEO: Choose a good SEO plugin, like RankMath, so you can easily configure your SEO, both on and off-page, to give yourself a fighting chance at ranking high in search pages.
    • Security: Protecting your site from nefarious actors and malware should be one of your top priorities. Incorporate a security plugin into your site for peace of mind.
    • Optimization: Keeping your site speedy involves adding a speed optimization plugin to your site. You should also consider a database optimization plugin to keep the bloat out of your site’s database. Cleaning your database keeps your site running smoothly for the long haul.
    • Caching: If you’re using a shared, VPS, or dedicated hosting provider, you may need to install your own caching solution. These cache plugins are considered the best of the best, ensuring your site’s files are served fast, keeping your bounce rate down and customer engagement up.

    Optional Plugins To Consider

In addition to must-have plugins, plenty are available to add extra functionalities, such as social media, advertising, live chat, and more. Here are a few additional plugins you might consider using. Depending on the type of website you plan to build, some of these may need to be revised. That said, it’s good to know what’s out there in case you need to add one in the future.

    • Chat: Incorporating a chat plugin into your website is an excellent way to stay connected to your customers. Plus, it’s a lot more personal than sending an email.
    • Affiliate marketing: If you have aspirations of turning your website into a money-making machine, adding an affiliate marketing plugin may be exactly what you need.
    • Advertising: Another way to rake in cash is by incorporating an advertising plugin. You can create banner ads, import ads from Google, and track their progress to boost your online sales.
    • Social media: Social proof is a key marketing strategy that every website owner should consider. You can boost SEO, increase engagement, and build trust with your audience by giving visitors a glimpse into your social platforms. A good social media plugin can give you all of those things.

    Step 8: Go Live!

The last and most exciting step in creating your WordPress website is taking it live. At this point, you’ve made your navigation, configured your SEO, and added content. This last step involves tying up a few more loose ends. With that in mind, we’ve created a handy checklist for you to follow to ensure you don’t miss anything.

      1. Conduct a content review: Make sure all content is accurate, free of misspellings, and check all links.
      2. Optimize: Make sure all images are under 200kb, and enable caching and modification to ensure your site loads fast. Run a GTMetrix report to see how well your site is performing.
      3. SEO and Analytics: Set up Google analytics, integrate it into your site and check all posts and pages to ensure a keyword, title, URL, and meta description are configured properly. Using an SEO plugin, generate an HTML sitemap.
      4. Security: Update all plugins, themes, and WordPress core.
      5. Check all forms: Test all forms to ensure email deliverability. If you encounter any issues, install and configure an SMTP plugin.
      6. Connect your domain: Point your domain to your new website, then install an SSL.
      7. Search engine visibility: Head back to Settings > Reading and uncheck the discourage search engines from indexing this site checkbox.
      8. Back up your site: Before pushing your site live, make a backup of your website either with your host or a plugin such as Updraft. If disaster strikes, you want to be sure you have the most recent iteration of your site to fall back on.

However, some essential ones include RankMath for SEO optimizing your content, UpdraftPlus for timely backups, and EWWW Image Optimizer for compressing images. Additionally, you may consider plugins like WP Rocket for speed optimization, WPForms for form creation, and MonsterInsights for analytics and data. Look at our comprehensive list of every plugin you need here.

Which is better, Wix or WordPress?

WordPress is better than Wix because it offers greater flexibility and customization options, a wider range of plugins and themes, better SEO capabilities, and more control over website hosting and data ownership. Additionally, WordPress is open-source software, meaning it is free and community-driven, whereas Wix is a proprietary platform with limited control over its features.

  • How to Host a Website in 2023 (Simple Beginner’s Guide)

Whether you’re a business owner, blogger, or freelancer, understanding the ins and outs of hosting a website is essential for establishing an online presence. There are many things to consider, from selecting the right hosting provider to choosing the right hosting type. This post will give you the tools to learn how to host a website, navigate the process, and set you up for success. So, let’s dive in!

    What is Hosting?

Web hosting is a service that allows your website’s content to be displayed online. Web hosts typically handle all of the resources, security, and features your website requires to keep it running. When you purchase a hosting plan, you are leasing a web server section where your website’s files and data will live. Depending on the type of website you plan to host, you’re hosting requirements will vary. For example, if you plan to host WordPress, the host you choose should be optimized for it and possess the latest version of PHP and MySQL.

    Website Builder vs CMS

    how to host a website

As previously mentioned, the hosting you need depends on the type of site you wish to host. Website builders, such as Squarespace, Wix, and Shopify, typically have their own hosting, whereas content management systems (CMS) like WordPress.org are self-hosted. There are other differences, so before deciding on a host, it’s important to determine which platform suits your needs best.

    Asking the Right Questions

When you’re in the market to host a website, you need to ask yourself a few questions. First, what type of website will you host? If you’re building a static HTML site, the hosting requirements are slightly different than if you plan to use WordPress. Secondly, plan for the traffic you hope to have rather than what you anticipate when starting out. A website with minimal traffic will likely only need a shared rather than a VPS hosting provider.

Additionally, determine whether you want to build your site in a local environment first. Local hosting is a great option for those just starting out that want to take the time to learn WordPress.

Lastly, you need to decide what hosting type is right for you. Read on to learn about the different kinds of hosting and who they are best suited for.

    Different Hosting Types

    how to host a website

It’s important to decide which hosting type you need. If you plan to use WordPress, you’ll need to understand the different hosting solutions available to you and which ticks the most boxes. There are several to choose from, each with pros and cons.

    Shared Hosting

    how to host a website

Image courtesy of Andrea Danti | Shutterstock

Shared hosting involves sharing server space and resources, such as RAM, bandwidth, and storage. It’s an affordable hosting solution but is best utilized by small websites or blogs that expect minimal traffic. Because of the resource limitations and potential performance impact, shared hosting isn’t the best choice for those looking to grow their business. That said, if you only want to host a small information website, you can get by just fine with shared hosting.

    Managed Hosting

    Managed WordPress hosting

Image courtesy of BestForBest | Shutterstock

Unlike other hosting types, managed hosting offers a hands-off experience in server maintenance. Managed hosts typically handle all security updates and patches, offer backups and staging sites, and an optimized server for your website. For WordPress users, managed hosting is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you can leave all of the techy stuff to the professionals. On the other hand, you may not be allowed to use any plugin you want. That said, the benefits of good managed hosting far outweigh the cons. Additionally, managed hosting is more affordable than VPS or dedicated hosting plans, ranging from a few dollars a month to $30.

    VPS Hosting

    VPS hosting

Image courtesy of Pramith Patali | Shutterstock

Virtual private server (VPS) hosting functions much like shared hosting, except you won’t have to share your resources with other customers. You’ll have more control over your sites, be able to scale up easier, and have definite performance enhancements. This is because each VPS environment functions separately, providing better use of resources, better security, and more customization. Because of this, VPS is suitable for growing websites with higher resource demands. The downside to VPS hosting is that it’s more expensive than shared or managed hosting plans, with average prices ranging from $30-$100 per month.

    Cloud Hosting

    Cloud hostin

Image courtesy of Eny Setiyowati | Shutterstock

One of the best hosting solutions is cloud hosting. It’s different than others, as all of a website’s files are served from a series of web servers hosted in the cloud. Because of this, websites built on cloud servers are faster, more scalable, and more reliable. With cloud hosting, you have the freedom to configure your own server and, in some cases, such as Pressable, a managed solution. Cloud hosting is relatively affordable, with prices ranging from $10-100 per month, depending on the provider.

How to Host a Website: Dedicated Hosting

    dedicated hosting

Image courtesy of Sammby | Shutterstock

Lastly, there is dedicated hosting. With this type of hosting, you’ll get your own server. One of the benefits of dedicated hosting is the freedom to configure your server in any way you choose. Dedicated hosting is an excellent choice for tech-savvy people who know their way around a server and have high-traffic requirements. The downside to dedicated hosting is the price, where you should expect to pay at least $100 per month. That said, if you have lofty goals for your website and anticipate a lot of visitors, it’s the best choice.

    Register a Domain

Before purchasing a hosting plan, you’ll want to buy a domain name. There are a couple of ways to do this, including through a good domain registrar or through a hosting provider. There are several things to consider when purchasing a domain, such as choosing the right domain for your business, choosing the perfect domain registrar, and determining which top-level domain (TLD) extension to pick. For most, it’s best to opt for a .com domain simply because it is the most recognizable. That said, there are cases where you might want .net rather than .com.

    Purchase Your Hosting Plan

    SiteGround WordPress hosting

Now that you understand the different hosting types, it’s time to purchase your hosting plan. For the best value, features, and scalability, we highly recommend SiteGround. They offer cloud-based managed hosting at reasonable prices. If you’re starting out, their StartUp plan is a great choice. With pricing for less than $15 per month, you’ll get a lot of bells and whistles, including free emails, migration, SSL, and CDN, along with several security features such as daily backups, malware scanning, and more.

    SiteGround site tools

SiteGround is simple to navigate, too, thanks to its intuitive Site Tools dashboard. There you can manage your websites, domains, and emails, make performance tweaks, access your website’s files, and get statistics on your website’s performance.

Let’s walk through the steps to set up your new hosting account through SiteGround.

    Choose Your Plan

As previously mentioned, SiteGround offers several hosting plans depending on your needs. For this tutorial, we’ll start with the StartUp plan. If you need more storage or resources in the future, you can easily change your plan at the click of a button. For now, this should suit newcomers quite well. Start by clicking the Start Now button on SiteGround’s home page.

    how to host a website

Scroll down the page to reveal the hosting plan choices. Click on the Get plan button for the StartUp plan.

    Choose StartUp plan

Next, you’ll decide whether to purchase a new domain through SiteGround or use one already purchased.

    register a new domain

    Create a SiteGround Account

The next step in the process is to create your SiteGround account. This information will be used for billing and registering your domain with ICANN should you purchase a domain through SG.

    Complete registration

Once you complete the registration fields, click the Pay Now button to set up your account.

    Complete SiteGround purchase

    Ready to Host!

Once you complete your purchase, you’ll be taken to your new SiteGround account, where you can set up your website. On the main home page in SiteGround, you’ll have access to a wealth of information to help you get started, along with quick links to your hosting plan, domains, and some helpful blog articles. Click the Set Up Site button to start.

    how to host a website

Next, choose whether to build your new website on a new, existing, or temporary domain. In this tutorial, we’ll start with a temporary domain. Click the Select button to continue.

    choose temporary domain

SiteGround will assign a temporary domain to your account. Click the Continue button to proceed to the next step.

    temporary domain

Next, select Start New Website. Alternatively, if you have a website you’d like to migrate to SiteGround, you can choose Migrate Website, and SiteGround will move your existing website to your new hosting plan for free.

    start new website

The next step is to choose the application you’d like to install. In this post, we’ll select WordPress.

    Choose WordPress

From there, you’ll need to create your WordPress login credentials. Input your email address (1), create a password (2), then click continue (3).

    how to host a website

Finally, if you wish to add extras like Site Scanner, you can do so on the final screen. Otherwise, click Finish.

    finish setup

That’s it! SiteGround will install WordPress for you, set up your database, and give you an easy way to build the website of your dreams.

Final Thoughts on How to Host a Website

These decisions are essential for establishing an online presence, from choosing the right hosting partner, like SiteGround, to considering the different hosting types. You can be confident that your new website will succeed by asking the right questions, understanding your business’s requirements, and taking advantage of features such as one-click installations. Remember to prioritize features such as uptime, performance, and security to ensure your customers have a seamless, enjoyable browsing experience. Initially, hosting a website may appear daunting, but once you acquire the right tools and know-how, you’ll have the necessary skills to create and maintain your website successfully.

  • How to Register a Domain Name in 2023 (Step by Step)

Having a strong online presence is one of the most important aspects of running a successful business. Whether you’re starting a new blog, setting up an ecommerce website, or creating a portfolio to showcase your work, securing a good domain name is an absolute must. Understanding how to register a domain name serves as an important first step toward establishing your online presence. In this post, we will guide you through the entire process, explain what a domain name is, and offer insight into the ways you can register your new domain.

    Let’s dive in.

    What is a Domain Name?

Also known as a uniform resource locator, or URL, a domain name is essentially your website’s address. Without domain names, people would have to access your website through an IP address with a string of numbers, such as 12.364.23.354. Can you imagine how tedious it would be to navigate websites using that method? Thankfully, there’s a better way: domain names. A domain name provides an easier way to navigate websites directly or through a search engine. A domain name helps your business be more memorable and easier to find and helps with search engine optimization (SEO).

How to Choose a Domain Name

When starting the process of choosing a domain name, there are a few things to consider. First, your domain should be related to your brand, website, or business name. Typing it should be easy, so avoiding overly long domain names is key. After all, you want your visitors to be able to easily type your domain into the browser directly, so keeping it short, catchy, and memorable is important.

Another consideration is to always opt for a top-level domain (TLD), such as .com. They are the most common, so most people consider them safe and reliable. Although there aren’t any technical differences in TLDs, it’s widely considered that .com will likely be more effective than a .net, .biz, or .org. In fact, according to w3Techs, .com domains make up nearly 48% of all domain names on the internet.

However, not having a .com TLD doesn’t have to be a deal breaker. The most important thing is to find the right domain name for you. That means choosing a lesser-known TLD is okay if your desired domain isn’t available as .com, and you’re set on your choice.

    Choosing a Registrar

Before registering your new domain, it’s important to consider the best registrar for your business. Thankfully, several domain name registrars will fit the bill. But first, let’s explain what a registrar is. Domain registrars are like an online store for domain names. You can buy, register, and point your domain to your hosting provider, where your website’s files are located. That said, there are some hosting providers, such as SiteGround, where you can purchase your domain and hosting together. Generally speaking, we don’t recommend doing this, as moving your domain could be difficult if you fall out of love with your hosting provider.

    Check Domain Availability

    Namecheap domain registrar

When brainstorming domain name ideas, checking for their availability is essential. All reputable domain registrars offer this capability, so it’s typically easy to determine what is available. For example, Namecheap allows you to check for potential domain names without having to purchase anything upfront.

One thing to keep in mind is not to get frustrated if your first pick isn’t available. With thousands of domain names being registered daily, it’s not out of the realm of possibility to miss out on your favorite. That said, you can easily find variations of your initial pick, with most registrars offering similar options based on your initial search.

How to Register a Domain Name

There are nearly unlimited registrars, each capable of helping you find the perfect domain name. As previously mentioned, there are hosting providers that offer the same service. For this tutorial, we’re going to cover an example of each. First, we’ll walk you through securing a domain through one of the most popular hosting providers, SiteGround. Additionally, we’ll show you how to register a new domain through a popular domain registrar, Namecheap.

How to Register a Domain Name Through SiteGround

SiteGround is one of the best managed hosting providers on the market. They are known for their excellent features, customer service, and value for the money. If you’re in the market for a new provider to go along with your new domain name, SiteGround is the way to go. Setting up a new domain through SiteGround is fast, easy, and affordable. Let’s walk you through the steps to purchase a new hosting plan and add a domain.

Step 1: Choose Your Hosting Plan

SiteGround offers three plans to get you started: StartUp, GrowBig, and GoGeek. If you’re starting out, the StartUp plan is the most affordable option at $14.99 monthly, although SG typically offers up to 80% discounts. Start by selecting the StartUp plan.

    SiteGround pricing

    Step 2: Choose a Domain

When the screen refreshes, you’ll be forwarded to the domain registration screen, where you can register a new domain or add an existing one. Select Register a new domain. Ensure the Domain Registration checkbox is selected.

    register a new domain

    Step 3: Search for Domains

Type in your first choice for a new domain, then click proceed.

    search for domain

If your choice is available, you’ll proceed to the next step in the process. If it’s already taken, SiteGround will offer several alternative selections based on the original.

    Alternate domain

From that point, you can choose one of the suggested domain names or search for an alternate.

    Step 4: Register Your Domain

The final step is to complete the registration process. You must complete the account and client information and input your payment method to secure your domain and hosting plan. Once the registration process is complete, your domain is secured, and you’re ready to start building the website of your dreams.

    Complete registration

How to Register a Domain Name With a Domain Registrar

Namecheap is among the best domain registrars you can get. With affordable pricing, multiple options for TLDs, and a user-friendly interface, beginners and professional web gurus alike can register a new domain in minutes.

Step 1: Conduct a Domain Search

The first step to registering your new domain using Namecheap is to search for what’s available. Fill in your choice on the Namecheap homepage and click search.

    Namecheap domain search

    Step 2: Choose Associated Domains

Once you search for the domain of your choice, the registration page will appear, letting you know whether the domain is available. Additionally, you’ll have the option to purchase similar ones should you want to map multiple domains.

    Namecheap alternate domains

Once you’ve selected the domains you wish to purchase, add them to your cart.

    Step 3: Purchase Add-ons

Namecheap will offer add-ons such as WordPress hosting, an SSL, and premium DNS, which provides DDoS attack protection and 100% uptime.

    Namecheap addons

Step 4: Create A Namecheap Account

Next, you’ll need to create an account to manage your domain and any add-ons you purchase.

how to register a domain name

Step 5: Register Your New Domain

On the next screen, you’ll take steps to register your new domain with Internet Corporation for Assigned Name and Numbers (ICANN). When a new domain is registered, it goes into a public directory. Your name and contact information will be recorded and available to anyone searching the ICANN directory.

how to register a domain name

Finally, you’ll set up your ICANN directory listing using the Whois database. This allows anyone with your domain name to learn who the owner is and their contact information. If you want that to remain private, you’ll need to opt into the domain privacy service by checking the Associate to this domain and enable it at the time of purchase checkbox.

how to register a domain name

From there, the only thing left to do is purchase your domain.

As you can see, registering a new domain with a hosting provider or domain registrar is a straightforward process, making it simple for people with any skill level to achieve.

Final Thoughts on Registering a Domain

Registering a domain name is an exciting milestone in building your online identity. By following our comprehensive guide, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate the domain registration process effortlessly, ultimately securing the best domain for your business.

If you need both a domain and hosting, you should try SiteGround. However, if you only need to purchase and register your domain, Namecheap is the perfect choice to kickstart your new business.

  • Character AI: Everything You Need To Know

The artificial intelligence (AI) world moves at lightning speed, and keeping up with the latest innovations can be tricky. As you get used to one chatbot, another pops up to steal the show. But don’t worry; we’re here to help you stay ahead of the game. Buckle up because, in this post, we’re featuring one of the coolest new AI chatbots: Character AI. We’ll help you discover what it’s capable of, how it works, and how to start using it to have interesting conversations, learn a new language, or create your own chatbot.

    Let’s dive in.

    What is Character AI?

    What is Character AI

Character AI is an artificial intelligence chatbot web application that uses neutral language models to generate text responses, allows for user-developed characters, and allows you to chat with fictional, historical, and celebrity figures in a dialogue. Unlike other AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Character AI’s output is more human-like and allows you to chat with more than one bot at a time, offering different perspectives. Developed by former Google AI developers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, Character AI was released in beta form in September 2022. Since its launch, it has become one of the most popular AI chatbots behind ChatGPT.

    How Does Character AI Work?

Built on large language models (LLM), Character AI is powered by deep machine learning, focusing primarily on conversations. During the training process, Character AI’s supercomputer continuously read large amounts of text, then learned to determine which words might come next in a sentence. The result is a highly entertaining, human-like AI that makes you feel like you’re talking to a real person. In this way, Character AI is more advanced than other AI chatbots because it allows users to immerse themselves in conversation with all types of personalities, including historical figures, celebrities, and other characters created by the community.

    Benefits of Using Character AI

There are a lot of unique benefits of using Character AI. First and foremost, it’s a great way to dialogue with different characters, giving you different perspectives. You can chat with Elon Musk, Edward Cullen from the popular Twilight books, or even Taylor Swift.

    chatting with Taylor Swift

As previously mentioned, these characters are more lifelike than other chatbots, so you feel like you are talking to an actual human being. Another benefit of this incredible AI is that you can create your own characters to interact with. It’s as easy as assigning a few parameters to give your character a personality, adding an avatar (which you can generate with the software itself), and you’re off to the races. Plus, you can take Character AI wherever you go, thanks to the new Android and iOS apps.

Another thing that sets Character AI apart is themes. Nearly twenty are available, including helpers, games, image generating bosts, movie and tv actors, and language learning.

    Character AI themes

What are the Limitations of Character AI?

Character AI is an impressive example of artificial intelligence, but it has limitations. Since the community creates these characters, false results, called hallucinations, are frequently generated. When you begin chatting with the various characters, it’s important to consider where they originate from and expect that most, if not all, of what they say is made up. Another limitation is image generation. While you can enable your characters to generate images, they do not belong to the same class as other AI art generators, primarily because it was created mainly as a text generator.

Additionally, it implements strict filtering, blocking any content considered unsafe for work (NSFW). This is a good thing depending on what you want to use it for. Finally, it doesn’t offer an API, so even though it’s open source, you can’t download it and create your own iteration on a local machine.

    How to Use Character AI

There are several ways to use Character AI, including chatting with historical figures, creating your own chatbot to interact with, learning a new language, and creating a chat room where multiple chatbots can communicate, to name a few. Let’s explore how to incorporate Character AI to improve your skillset or engage in intelligent conversations.

Chat with a Wide Range of Characters

One of the unique features of Character AI is the ability to interact with a wide range of characters., including historical figures (both living and deceased), as well as user-generated chatbots with distinct personalities. Its deep machine-learning process allows users to experience authentic conversations where it’s difficult to tell your chatting with a computer. Whether you want to chat with a Pokemon, George Washington, or Elon Musk, Character AI provides an interesting perspective that other chatbots can’t. You can engage in interesting conversations with AI-generated characters to expand your knowledge, provide inspiration, or be entertained.

    chatting with Elon

    Create Your Own AI Character

One of the best features of Character AI is the ability to create your own chatbot to interact with. The first step is clicking the create button located in the navigation bar on the left-hand side of the interface.

    create character

You’ll have the choice between creating a character or a character room. Choose the first option, Create a character.

    create a character AI

On the next screen, you’ll configure your chatbot’s settings. You’ll give it a name (1), specify the opening greeting for your character (2), choose whether to enable image generation (3), decide whether you want your character to be public, unlisted, or private (4), create an avatar (5) or upload an existing one (6), edit advanced details (7), and click the create button (8) to create your new character.

    settings screen

If you need some assistance, check out the character book, which gives you a wealth of information to help you create your AI characters.

    Learn a New Language

    learn a new language

Character AI isn’t just about conversing with celebrities or fictional entities. You can use it to improve yourself. A good example of this is using it to learn a new language. You can use it to brush up on your English, expand your vocabulary, learn German, Japanese, or French, or use it as a translator, to name a few.

    translator

As previously mentioned, most of the output is likely false, so checking what it gives you is important. After playing with the Translator bot, we can say that it is mostly accurate and had no trouble translating a simple sentence into Urdu, the primary language spoken in Pakistan.

    Create a Character Room

Creating a chat room is a fun way to use Character AI. It’s simple to set up, and you can add personalities you’ve made or user-generated ones. For example, we set up a chat room with Elon Musk and Albert Einstein and instructed them to discuss space exploration and time travel. One of the coolest things about this is that you can interact with them or sit back and watch the conversation unfold.

If you’d like to create your own chat room, it’s quite easy. Start by clicking the create button, then select create a room.

    create chat room

Next, give your room a name, add characters, assign a topic, and click Create it. Note: You can only add characters you create or add some of the top 5000 most popular ones.

    add people and topics

Once your chat room is created, you can begin typing to interact with the other chat members or sit back and watch them interact.

    chatting about time travel

    Is Character AI Safe?

After reading about the conversations you can have using such an incredible platform, you might wonder if it’s safe. You’ll be pleased to know that character creators won’t be able to view your conversations. That said, the platform will keep a record of everything you say, intending to use it to improve the results. With that in mind, carefully consider what you say and how you say it, especially if you are concerned with privacy. When creating personalities, you can make them public or private, providing an extra layer of security.

    Final Thoughts on Character AI

As we’ve discussed, Character AI provides a unique experience where visitors can interact with various personalities, create their own characters, and even learn new languages, thanks to LLM’s training, helping it to sound more human. Unlike similar AI chat software like Jasper and ChatGPT, Character AI stands out because it lets you have interesting conversations with multiple chatbots simultaneously.

As AI technology continues evolving, we can expect Character AI to evolve along with it. Be looking for creators to enhance their already amazing technology with better image generation and different ways to incorporate it into your daily life. In the meantime, take some time to play around with it and experience all that it can do.

  • How to Use Photoshop AI Generative Fill in 2023 (Detailed Tutorial)

Adobe Photoshop has been the go-to software for image editing for over thirty years. In early 2023, Adobe released the next big thing in image editing – Photoshop AI generative fill. Using Photoshop’s latest beta version, you can add or delete elements, extend the width or height of an image, and remove backgrounds, to name a few things. This post will explain Photoshop AI’s generative fill, what you can do with it, and some tips on using it effectively.

    Let’s dive in.

What is Photoshop AI Generative Fill?

    Photoshop AI

Photoshop’s AI generative fill is a powerful feature that enables you to effortlessly fill, edit, and remove image elements with just a few clicks. Powered by machine learning AI, it generates parts of images or even entire composite photos in a fraction of the time it would take if a human were to do it. By analyzing each pixel of an image, it matches lighting, perspective, coloring, and shadows, resulting in a remarkably realistic piece of art. This non-destructive tool allows you to revert easily any changes you aren’t happy with, as it organizes every generated element into its own layer, complete with a layer mask. As a result, you can enhance and modify the designs you create using any of Photoshop’s other tools, such as blending modes or filter effects. Even better, it also works with your favorite Photoshop keyboard shortcuts.

Currently, the Photoshop AI generative fill tool is only available through Photoshop beta, so you’ll need to download it from Adobe before you can experiment.

    How to Download Photoshop Beta

    Photoshop beta

You must subscribe to Adobe’s Creative Cloud platform to use Photoshop AI generative fill unless you want to experiment with it on Adobe’s Firefly web app. The cost varies depending on your desired tools, but you can get Photoshop as a standalone product for around $21 a month. If you want to test out the features of Photoshop before purchasing, they offer a 7-day free trial, so you can decide if you’d like to continue using it.

Once you sign up, click the download button to get Photoshop. Doing so will install the Creative Suite control panel on your computer. Open the Creative Cloud dashboard, then navigate to the Apps tab. From there, search for the Beta Apps tab on the left-hand side of the dashboard. Click on it, then search for Photoshop (Beta) to install the application.

    install Photoshop

Navigating the Photoshop AI Generative Fill Taskbar

Once you’ve installed Photoshop beta, you’re ready to start creating. Before that, let’s look at the generative fill contextual taskbar and its settings so you know what the tools are and where they are located. The taskbar will appear underneath the image area after importing a new image or creating a new document.

    generative fill taskbar

Here’s a breakdown of the taskbar’s settings when an image or subject is not selected, along with a brief description of each:

    1. Select subject: Use this button to allow Photoshop to select the subject of your photo. This is useful when you want to remove the background of your photos or select a subject, such as a person, car, animal, etc., that you want to use.
    2. Remove background: Photoshop uses AI to detect the most likely subject in your photo and deletes the background around it.
    3. Transform image: flip your photo horizontally or vertically.
    4. Add an adjustment layer: This allows you to apply one of many adjustment presets to alter the color and tone of your image. Additionally, you can create your own adjustment layer using this tool.
    5. Taskbar appearance: Choose whether to show, hide, pin, or unpin the taskbar to its current location.
    6. Properties panel: Shows or hides the properties panel for your image and all generative fill layers.

    taskbar settings

To make a selection in your image, you can use the select subject tool (1), any of the marquee or lasso tools (2), and the object selection, quick selection, or the magic wand tool (3). The selection appears with the marching ants (4) around it, then reveals the generative fill tools in the taskbar (5).

    making a selection

Now let’s look at the tools available when a subject is selected:

    1. Generative fill: Where you’ll add text prompts to create images.
    2. Selection tool: You can select the border, expand, contract, feather, or smooth the selection for better results.
    3. Invert selection: Selects the pixels outside of the selection rather than inside.
    4. Transform selection
    5. Mask selection
    6. Create a new adjustment layer
    7. Fill selection with color or gradient
    8. Toolbar positioning settings
    9. Deselect selection

    generative fill tools

How to Use Photoshop AI Generative Fill

There are several different ways to use Photoshop AI’s generative fill tools. You can use it to create images from scratch, remove objects and backgrounds, extend the size of your canvas, and generate backgrounds or realistic objects. Even though there are only a few, these tools will save designers a ton of time editing low-quality or unattractive photos.

    Extend Images With Photoshop AI

Using the photo from the previous section, we will fill the white areas of our canvas. To do this, select the rectangular marquee tool to form a selection around the edges of our canvas. Hold shift to make more than one selection, then drag the selection over the white areas of the image. Be sure to extend the selection to include some of the pixels from the original image. Finally, click the generative fill button.

    extend photoshop canvas

You’ll notice that the generative fill taskbar reveals a text prompt input box. For this instance, we aren’t going to enter any text. By leaving it blank, Photoshop AI examines the pixels in the image and extends them within your selected area. Click the generate button to process the fill.

    generate background

Here’s what our image looks like after Photoshop fills in the blank areas of our canvas. After using generative fill, you’ll have three variations to choose from which can be found in the generative layer properties. As previously mentioned, Photoshop generates a new layer, complete with a mask, so your original image remains untouched. If you aren’t satisfied with the results, you can click the generate button, which provides you with three new variations. You can repeat that process as many times as you like to get the results you’re looking for. Delete any variations you rule out to keep the file size down.

    image variations

    Generate Backgrounds with Photoshop AI

In addition to extending the image area of your canvas, you can use generative fill to replace backgrounds in your images. For this step, we’ll eliminate the background of our car image and replace it with a depiction of the salt flats in Utah. First, you want to ensure nothing is selected. We can use the select subject button for our image, but other selection tools may produce a better result depending on the image you decide to use.

With your subject selected, click the invert selection tool. Make any necessary adjustments to your selected area, then click the generative fill button.

    inverse selection

When the text prompt appears, type in the background you wish to see. We used Utah salt flats for this example. Next, click the generate button.

    replaced background

Generate Realistic Objects With Photoshop AI

Now that we have the background in place, let’s use generative fill to add a lake to our photo. Using the lasso tool, we’ll draw a selection beneath the car. Be careful not to include the car itself, as Photoshop will overwrite any selected pixels with the information in the text prompt. Once the marching ants are in place, click the generative fill button, then enter the prompt: reflective lake. Then, click generate.

    Photoshop AI add object

As you can see, Photoshop generated a small pond in the foreground of our image, complete with the car’s reflection.

    reflection of car in lake

    Remove Objects With Photoshop AI

Another cool feature of Photoshop AI’s generative fill is the ability to remove objects in your photos. Let’s say you have a perfect image minus a few blemishes. Using AI, Photoshop will remove aspects of your image and fill it with surrounding pixels in the image. This may sound similar to the content-aware tool, but it goes way beyond that. Rather than getting a muddy, odd appearance, the replaced portions of your image are so seamless it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference.

For example, we’d like to replace the bird in this photo, so we’ll need to remove the one currently there. Using the lasso tool, form a selection around the bird, click generative fill, then generate. This will tell Photoshop to replace what’s in the selection with surrounding pixels in the image. Be sure to leave the text prompt empty unless you want to add something in its place.

    remove object

Photoshop does an excellent job of removing the bird as if it were never there.

    Photoshop AI object removal

    Create Unique Composite Images

In addition to altering existing images, Photoshop’s AI generative fill can create images too. However, we should note that Photoshop struggles with images larger than 1024 pixels, often resulting in lower-quality images. So, with that in mind, when creating new images, you’ll either need to create a canvas no larger than 1024 pixels (w x h) or generate your composite image in sections.

Start with a blank canvas measuring 1920 pixels wide by 1024 pixels tall. We’ll set the resolution to 300 pixels, select RGB as the color mode, and set the background color to white.

    Create new Photoshop document

Next, use the rectangular marquee tool to draw a rectangular selection around the lower third of your image.

    make a selection

Using the generative fill tool, type in beach sand with ocean waves, then click generate.

    generate selection

Next, draw a selection around the middle third of your image, click generative fill, and enter the following prompt: majestic snow-capped mountain range. Then click generate to create the section.

    generate second selection

For the third selection, draw a rectangular selection around the upper third of your image. Enter sun-filled sky, sparse clouds as the text prompt, then click generate.

    generate third selection

Now that we have our background, let’s add a couple of accents. Start by creating a selection in the water with the lasso tool. Click generative fill, add the text prompt yacht in an ocean, then click generate.

adding additional elements to Photoshop composite

Lastly, we’ll add a man with two dogs looking out at the scenery. Form a selection using the rectangular marquee tool over the lower right corner of the composite image. Use the text prompt dog and its owner looking over the ocean, then click generate.

    final design elements

    Photoshop AI Generative Fill Tips

Now that you better understand how generative fill works, we’d like to give you a few tips to help you use it more effectively. While Photoshop’s AI tools work great all on their own, there are a few ways to get better results and combine them with other features in Photoshop.

It’s OK to Leave the Prompt Blank

When you want to remove an element, make a selection over where you want the element removed, click generative fill, then generate without entering a text prompt. This lets Photoshop know that you don’t wish to add anything; you only want to fill the selection with a similar look as the surrounding image pixels. It’s a great way to clean up photos with undesirable elements.

    Photoshop AI before after

    Be Creative With Your Selection

One unique feature of Photoshop AI’s generative fill tool is that the shape and size of the selection matter. For example, if you want to add a hat to a person in your image, be sure to draw your selection as closely as possible regarding the type of hat you’d like. Additionally, note that small selections add a smaller design element, whereas a large selection would result in a larger element. Using the appropriate shape for the item you want to add is an excellent way to give Photoshop more details on what you want, resulting in better output.

    selection differences

    Don’t Use Instructional Prompts

One thing that Photoshop AI doesn’t do well is determining instructional prompts. Avoid using words like create, alter, or make when inputting your text prompts. Using descriptive adjectives and nouns will always give you better results. For example, if you generate an image of a dog, select the area around it, then tell Photoshop to make the dog bigger, it will likely result in an entirely different picture of a dog rather than a bigger version of the original one. Unlike other AI design tools, less is more. Photoshop’s AI doesn’t require descriptive styling words like highly detailed or cinematic photography because it will match the style of the photo you’re editing.

    Utilize the Object Selection Tool

Some users might not love the marching ants (selection) when working in Photoshop. After all, they can sometimes be hard to see. A better way to make your selections stand out is by using Photoshop’s object selection tool. It’s excellent for highlighting individual areas for heightened visibility and gives you a more visual representation of the area you’re working with.

    object selection tool

Use it to Blend Photos Together

Combining photos is another great way to use Photoshop AI’s generative fill feature. We’ll show you an example with two video game character images created in Midjourney. We’ll start by creating a blank canvas measuring 1800px by 1024px. Then we’ll import the first image into your canvas by clicking the import button on the contextual taskbar.

    blank canvas

Next, we’ll use the crop tool to extend our canvas to provide more room for blending our images.

    extend canvas

Then we’ll import our other image and add it to the canvas on the left side.

    add image Photoshop AI

To blend the two photos together, we must ensure that both images are on the same layer. To do this, select the top layer, then hold Control + Shift + Alt + E (Windows) or Command + Shift + Alt + E (Mac) to tell Photoshop to create a new layer containing all other visible layers.

    new layer

With the new layer selected, we’ll add a selection between the two photos, ensuring to include pixels from both images in the selection. Finally, click generative fill, then generate without adding a text prompt. The result is a blended photo that took seconds to create.

    blend result

Before and After Examples Using Photoshop AI

We thought it might be fun to share a few of our creations as we researched this article, as it shows some of the things you can do with Photoshop’s AI generative fill tool. Its AI tools are impressive, whether you need to make small adjustments to an existing image or do a complete overhaul.

Before: An image of two people climbing a rock wall.

    Photoshop AI

After: Those two people climb steep mountains while animals graze nearby. Cheesy, we know.

    generative fill example

Before: Photo of a Jeep driving through a residential neighborhood.

    before generative fill

After: A much more fitting image of a Jeep in a mountainous lake scene, driving down a dirt road. Now we’re getting somewhere.

    after generative fill

Before: Photo of a Goldendoodle standing in a kitchen.

    dog in kitchen

After: A Goldendoodle, standing in a picturesque lake, surrounded by boats, trees, and gorgeous lake homes. This one’s not bad, but the lighting is a little off. But for straight-out-of-the-box AI, it’s pretty good.

    after Photoshop AI generative fill

Before: A bagpiper standing in a residential driveway.

    before generative AI

After: A bagpiper standing in the Scottish highlands on an overcast day. Ok, that’s pretty cool.

    piper after

Composite image: We generated this from a blank canvas using only the rectangle selection tool and generative fill. Although pretty rough, it serves as a good starting point.

    Photoshop composite

    Photoshop AI Image Usage Rights

We could only end our article by mentioning the subject of generative fill and the usage rights of the photos it creates. Adobe has made it clear from the beginning that anything created with their AI programs is prohibited from using any images produced commercially. Now, this could be because they are currently in Beta. Adobe announced its plans to provide Firefly commercially, which may become more widely available soon. Regardless, you can create images to share with your friends on social media platforms or enjoy them for what they are as long as you aren’t profiting from them.

Final Thoughts on Photoshop AI Generative Fill

Photoshop AI is already an amazing tool, even in its beta form. Using the impressive AI-powered generative fill, you can alter images in nearly any way you imagine. While it does a good job of adding elements and removing backgrounds, it still has a long way to go. There are limitations, such as a maximum image size of 1024px, the lack of commercial image usage, and the need for better results for faces, hands, and animals. Undoubtedly, Adobe will continue to make improvements as the technology evolves.

We look forward to seeing how it develops while in beta. In the meantime, we can all have a little fun with it. Happy creating!
