  • What is WordPress? Start Here (2023 Beginners Guide)

Whether or not you’re in the website business, chances are high that you’ve heard of WordPress at some point. The reason is simple: it’s the most used platform to build websites. With 43% of the market share, it seems like every other website you come across is built with WordPress. In this post, we’ll explain what WordPress is, its features, the types of sites you can create with it, and its benefits. Let’s dive in.

    What is WordPress?

    what is WordPress

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that is built using PHP and MySQL. It is open-source, which means everyone can use it. It’s also constantly improving, which makes this a reliable option for building your website.

    How it Works

WordPress mainly focuses on the backend of your website. It creates the foundation for you to build the front end of your website. These are the two important things needed to have a functional WordPress backend on your website:

    1. WordPress Core

WordPress core consists of the files and code needed for the WordPress installation. Without WordPress core, your website won’t work. These need to be installed before anything else.

    2. Database

There needs to be a database supporting your website as well. Luckily, most good hosting providers come with one-click WordPress installs. During this install, they automatically generate a database for your website. If you were to install WordPress on your website manually, you’d need to create the MySQL database as well.

    Who Created it

WordPress is owned and operated by Automattic. It was created in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. WordPress grew mainly because of its open-source nature. Because of the community of developers contributing to WordPress, it grew into the most-used platform for creating websites nowadays.

    Who Uses it

As mentioned before, WordPress is open-source. This means anyone can use it and modify it to their convenience. This makes WordPress a go-to for building a wide variety of websites. Generally, WordPress is used mostly by:

    • Bloggers
    • Small business owners
    • Freelancers
    • Agencies

    Main Features

We’ll get into the advantages of WordPress further down the post, but let’s highlight some key functionality of WordPress. Once WordPress is installed on your website, you’ll get access to the WordPress dashboard. This is what that looks like:

    WordPress dashboard

You’ll navigate different parts of your website using the sidebar on the left.

Built-in Page, Post, and Project Custom Post Types

WordPress is very intuitive. It provides you with a streamlined structure you can use for your website. There are some recurring post types that you might need for your website. Pages is one of those. Think of it this way: whatever type of website you create, chances are high that you might need more than 1 page. Some websites have hundreds of pages on them.

    WP pages

The need for multiple pages creates an organized way to create and organize them. That’s why there’s a custom post type assigned for pages. You can add a new page and manage the existing pages in this area. You can perform bulk actions, set parent pages, and more.

The same counts for posts (particularly helpful if you run a blog or blog area on your website), and projects.

    WP posts

Grouping these under a particular custom post type also helps you style them. You can create templates and assign them to a specific post type. Many premium themes, like Divi, provide you with a Theme Builder that allows you to do just that. You get to style every aspect of your website and basically create your own “theme,” in many cases, without needing a single line of code thanks to full site editing.

    Themes

WordPress themes allow you to give your website a unique look. There are thousands of free themes that you can install directly through the WordPress dashboard, or you can install a premium theme, such as Divi. There are themes for nearly any type of website, including business, blogging, real estate, directories, and ecommerce websites.

    Plugins

WordPress plugins allow you to add extra functionality to your website. Thousands of plugins are available in the WordPress repository or by third-party developers. Each one has a specific focus and depends on what type of site you need, but there are some essential plugins that any WordPress website owner can benefit from. These include plugins for SEO, backing up your website, caching, analytics, and adding social media.

    Dynamic Menus

You can also create dynamic menus for your website, which is useful for learning management systems and membership sites where you want to restrict content at the user level. These can include menu items for logging in and out, ecommerce menu links, and more.

    Media Library

WordPress comes with a media gallery where you can add images, audio and video files, pdfs, and more to use within your website. You can also edit media files and add metadata for titles, captions, alt tags, and more through the media gallery. If you want added functionality for your files, you can install one of these media gallery plugins.

    WordPress.org vs. WordPress.com

When talking about WordPress, we usually refer to WordPress.org (unless specified otherwise). While these two come from the same source, they have some notable differences. We have a separate post that goes into detail on what the differences and similarities are.

But in short, WordPress.com is entirely separate from WordPress.org. It is a hosting plan provided by the creators of WordPress.org, Automattic, and is a suitable solution for bloggers starting small. WordPress.com is much more limited than WordPress.org, with many more rules for ad placement, themes, plugins, and more.

    WP.com

WordPress.org, however, refers to the WordPress open-source software you can install on any website you build, no matter what hosting provider you choose. You also own your website and its data, and you can easily transfer it to another host if you want to. It’s the most-used content management system (CMS) in the world and is highly customizable.

What Kind of Websites Can You Build With WordPress?

Whether you’re a beginner or not, you can build a wide range of websites using WordPress. Let’s go through some of the most popular options WordPress is used for.

    Business

    Divi Theme for Business

Those embarking on a new business venture or needing a good platform to build on will love WordPress. As mentioned previously, it’s open source, so there are a ton of plugins and themes, like Divi, to help you stand out from the crowd. In addition to that, it’s SEO-friendly, has great support, and is mobile-friendly. Because of this, Google loves it. Using an SEO plugin like Rank Math, you can easily add keywords, metadata, and schema to help your business rank higher in the search engine ranking pages (SERPs).

    Ecommerce

    OceanWP theme

WordPress is the way to go to sell products on your website. Thanks to plugins like WooCommerce, you can easily add physical or virtual products. Plugins, such as Dokan, will allow you to create a complete marketplace that enables users to create their own stores within your site. There are also ecommerce or WooCommerce-specific themes, like OceanWP that come with WooCommerce and a payment gateway pre-installed so you can get your site up in a few minutes.

    Blogs

When WordPress was introduced in the early 2000s, it was primarily a blogging platform. Therefore, it’s an excellent platform for communicating your message. You can write and publish posts within minutes and easily share them on your social media platforms for greater exposure. Although there are other blogging platforms, such as Blogger and Medium, no other platform is as customizable.

    Portfolios

    portfolio theme

Using WordPress to showcase your work is a great choice if you’re a photographer, graphic designer, or web developer. Out of the box, WP allows you to embed videos, image galleries, and other media, so creating a portfolio website is a breeze. You can use a generic WordPress theme to feature your work or a portfolio theme, such as Bridge, to give the world a glimpse into your creative body of work.

    Learning Management Systems (LMS)

    LearnDash

In addition to more broad-spectrum websites, WordPress can create the most elaborate learning management systems. With LMS plugins such as LifterLMS or Learndash, you can create courses, quizzes, and lessons, add a paywall, and sell access to your content.

    LMS layout pack for Divi

Alternatively, you can create an LMS using Divi, using one of our layout packs, and the Restrict Content Pro plugin.

    Membership Sites

    MemberPress plugin

WordPress is a great choice if you’re looking to build a membership website. Through a membership plugin such as MemberPress, you can create membership levels, assign content to those levels, and make money.

    Forums

CM Answer Q&A Plugin for WordPress

Forums are excellent for building an online community of like-minded individuals. Using WordPress and a forum plugin like CM Answers, you can easily bring your forum to life in a few steps. CM Answer’s PayPal and Stripe integration allows you to monetize your forum, providing a good way to earn extra income.

    Why You Should Use WordPress

There are many reasons why WordPress is the most popular tool to build a website. Let’s go through some of the most important ones.

    Free

First of all, WordPress is free. It’s open-source, so you won’t have to pay a dime for it. To create a website that matches all your criteria, however, you’ll likely need to buy premium products that go with your WordPress website.

So, yes, WordPress is free, but depending on your customization needs, there are hidden costs like themes and plugins. And let’s not forget hosting. Any website you want to share with the World Wide Web must be hosted somewhere. Some free hosting options exist, but you’ll most likely want something more fitting. If you’re looking for a suitable host, make sure to check out our top recommendations when it comes to WordPress hosting.

Extensive Customization Options (themes, plugins, etc)

As previously mentioned, WordPress comes with nearly unlimited customization options. WordPress is the most customizable CMS on the market, using themes, plugins, custom CSS, and HTML. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned web developer, you can use WP to build the website of your dreams.

    Easy to Use

Another benefit of WP is its ease of use. For new users, there is a learning curve. That said, it doesn’t take long to learn WordPress. Once you get the hang of creating posts and pages, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to build a website.

Extensive documentation (WordPress Blogs, Tutorials, etc)

While the platform does have a slight learning curve, there are countless tutorials and blogs out there (like ours) to help you along the way. This is especially true for our own theme, Divi, which has an extensive documentation library with more than 90 easy-to-follow tutorials that will help you become a WordPress guru in no time.

    SEO Friendly

One of the reasons WP is so popular is because of its SEO-friendly nature. Out of the box, it comes with features that make Google happy. For example, WP alerts Google whenever you upload new content to your website. Because of this, WP websites are more likely to get a bump in the SERPs faster than a static HTML site would. Combining WP’s built-in features with a quality SEO plugin like AIOSEO allows you to add keywords, metadata, and rich snippets. You can also add a good SEO tool to track your keywords, analyze rankings, and look for opportunities to improve your search engine rankings.

    Speed

WP is pretty speedy out of the box. That said, it will need some help if you use video, images, or other media content. Thankfully, there are excellent speed optimization plugins, such as WP Rocket, that will make your website a speed demon. Another way to ensure your site’s performance is by choosing a fast WordPress host.

    WordPress Hosting Options

Choosing the right hosting is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your website. With the right hosting, your website will be fast, secure, and stable. Without one, you risk losing visitors due to slow loading times. Not only that, you expose yourself to malware, bots, hackers, and downtime.

    What is WordPress Hosting?

    What is WordPress hosting

WordPress hosting is a type of hosting that is optimized for WordPress. Generally, WP hosts use specific technology geared towards WP websites, which includes the necessary security, speed, and performance requirements. Most quality hosts include one-click WP installs, backups, free site migration, caching, and security features such as a web application firewall (WAF), DDoS protection, and malware detection.

    Types of WordPress Hosting

Several types of hosting are available for WordPress, including shared, managed, cloud, and VPS. Small informational sites may be able to get away with shared hosting, but for those looking to build their business over time, it’s a good idea to choose a host that can grow with you, like SiteGround or Cloudways.

    Top 3 Hosts

There are dozens of hosts available for WP, but we highly recommend a few.

    SiteGround

    SiteGround WordPress hosting

SiteGround is our go-to for hosting. It’s optimized for WordPress, is based on Google Cloud, and has speed enhancements like caching, a free CDN, and custom PHP to improve page loading speed. You can’t go wrong with an affordable starting price of $14.99 monthly and features such as free migration, SSL, and business email. They also offer advanced security features, including daily backups, malware and DDoS protection, and a web application firewall.

Pricing: Starting at $14.99 per month.

There’s also 24/7 support, daily performance monitoring, free backups, staging and SSL, and hack recovery assistance should you need it.

Pricing: Starting at $25 per month.

The interface does take some getting used to, but we have extensive tutorials to help you along the way. Resources for Building a WordPress Website

By now, it is probably clear that WordPress is a community effort. Many users use WordPress daily, and countless WordPress creators try to help those users build the website they need. Let’s look at some of the best WordPress themes and plugins you should check out if you’re new to WordPress.

    Best WordPress Themes

Just like there are different types of websites, different themes fulfill the needs. Generally, you get the option between two types of themes:

    1. A theme specific to your niche
    2. A multi-purpose theme

Especially the latter option is popular nowadays and usually goes hand in hand with a visual builder like Divi.

    Divi visual builder

Depending on what type of theme you’re looking for, you can browse through our different posts with recommendations. Some of the most popular theme types are mentioned here:

    Best WordPress Plugins

Every WordPress website has at least one plugin installed on it! But preferably, you’ll at least go for security and SEO plugins. There are other optional WordPress plugins, such as a YouTube plugin.

You can view all the top recommended plugin posts here. Make sure you pick out the plugins you need. In this case, more isn’t better. You want to prioritize the speed of your website, so carefully curating the plugins you decide to use on your website is a must!

What You Need to Get Started

In this tutorial, we’ll specifically focus on building a homepage, but if you’re new to Divi, you’ll have to make sure the following things are in place:

Options: Build From Scratch or Use a Premade Layout

When wanting to create a homepage with Divi, there are generally two ways to go about it.

    1. Use a premade layout as a base, and modify it as you go
    2. Build the homepage layout from scratch

Depending on your needs, you might go for either one of these options, but with more than 300 free layout packs available, chances are very high you’ll find something to your liking. Using a premade layout doesn’t mean you have to stick with that design entirely. Rather, it’s a great opportunity to save time while tweaking existing elements until you get to your desired outcome.

You can use Divi AI to create your page from scratch, or modify existing content. In this tutorial, we’ll pick the latter. We want to go from nothing to the end result as quickly as possible!

Step 1: Create a New Page

There is a lot of lorum ipsum text on the page, that we’ll replace. We’ll also create some new variations of the images used throughout this layout. All of this is made possible with Divi AI! Previously, you had to hire a copywriter and purchase stock images, but you can now use Divi AI to fulfill those needs.

Step 3: Generating Copy Using Divi AI

Now that we’ve uploaded the layout to our page, we can start focusing on the copy! We’ll use Divi Text AI to generate our copy, which makes it really easy to get your website up and running as quickly as possible. Let’s explore some of the features that come with Divi Text AI and how you can use them.

Rework Existing Copy or Create New Copy Altogether

There are two key ways to generate copy in Divi AI:

    1. Reworking existing copy
    2. Creating new copy

Depending on how much influence you want to have on the copy, you can pick either one of these options.

Understanding the Divi Text AI Interface

Divi Text AI is very straightforward. Let’s take a look at some things you can do with it.

If you want to write with Divi, you can choose to automatically generate copy. This option takes into account your website’s and page’s information.

You can generate copy for every text field on your page, so go ahead and either write the remaining titles and paragraphs on your page. Here’s how we approached changing the paragraph content right below the title, for instance:

  • How to Make a Website From Scratch in 2023 (Detailed Tutorial)

Online presence knows many forms. One of them is having your own website. Whether for your business or your personal brand, having a website can help you boost your online presence. We’ll show you how to make a website from scratch to help you get your website up and running as soon as possible. We’ll provide you with all the essential steps you need! In total, we’ll go over 13 steps. This post should help you build a clear action plan when planning to build your own website.

    Let’s get to it.

Do I Need to Know How to Code?

Knowing how to code used to be essential when it came to websites. Although it is highly recommended that you have a background in some basic web development, it is not necessary. Many tools out there focus on making website building a visual experience. That’s the approach we’ll take in this post. You won’t need technical expertise to follow this tutorial and make a website from scratch.

Step 1: CMS or Website Builder?

    WordPress.org

The two main options you have when deciding to build your own website are:

    1. a content management system
    2. a website builder

A content management system, like WordPress, lets you control every aspect of your website, including hosting. They’re often free as well. The combination of these two options makes content management systems the most popular option out there.

A website builder, on the other hand, locks you into their hosting platform. You have way less control, and you’re often stuck with the website builder, which can result in you getting “stuck” if you’re disappointed with the software.

Our choice: For this practical tutorial, we’ll choose WordPress.org. It’s free, has a reasonable learning curve, and has many options to bring your website to life.

Step 2: Choose a Hosting Provider

Choosing a hosting provider is the next important decision you must make when making a website. There are many hosting plans, so it can be hard to see the forest for the trees. We’ll try to lay it out for you as easily as possible.

    Hosting Types

The hosting options vary based on website traffic. For low traffic, shared hosting works, but you’ll share storage and resources. Managed WordPress hosting is better for most as it handles security and technical issues. Those needing a robust solution can consider VPS hosting—a cheaper alternative to dedicated hosting with similar features. For more guidance on selecting the right WordPress hosting, refer to our comprehensive article on types and selection.

    Our Recommendation: SiteGround

    SiteGround WordPress hosting

We’ll assume you want to build a simple website where you don’t expect too much traffic. In this case, a shared hosting plan will do its job (for now). You can always scale up your hosting option. Our recommendation for hosting is SiteGround. It has a 4.4 out of 5 score on Trustpilot and is well-merited. Their platform and hosting solutions prioritize the client and their needs.

    Pricing

    SiteGround pricing

SiteGround offers three plans: the StartUp for $14.99 per month, the GrowBig for $24.99, and the GoGeek for $39.99. For this tutorial, we’ll select the GoGeek plan, which will give us 40GB of web space, 400,000 monthly visits, and quite a few excellent features to get us started.

    Create SiteGround Account

The next step is to create your account. Start by selecting a plan (for us, it’s the GoGeek plan), then follow the steps to register a new domain or add your current one.

    choose a domain

Finally, add account information such as your email and password, client information, payment information, and hosting length: monthly or yearly.

    Create SiteGround account

    Step 3: Choose Your Domain

Once you’ve chosen your hosting provider, you can continue by choosing your domain (if you don’t already own one).

    .COM

The most popular URLs end in dot com. It’s rooted in our brain. By default, we tend to trust dot com domains more than other ones, which positively impacts the brand.

    Make it Rememberable

Whether you go with a dot com domain or not, it’s important to make your domain rememberable. Especially long term, you don’t want to make it hard for your visitors and customers to find you online.

    Register Your Domain

Many domain registrars are available, but picking a good one is important. Some of the best domain registrars are Namecheap or SiteGround, but be sure to do your research to determine which is right for you.

    Step 4: Install WordPress.org

Once your hosting and domain are in place, it’s time to install WordPress on your website. There are many reasons to choose WordPress above any other option. Firstly, it’s the most popular CMS out there for a reason. It’s intuitive, open source, and allows full customization. You also have endless theme and plugin options. It also doesn’t hurt that you don’t have to pay a dime to use WordPress.org on your website!

    Automatic Install

To set up WordPress on your SiteGround domain, you can navigate to the home page of your SiteGround account and click Set Up Site.

    set up website

Select your site’s new, existing, or temporary domain, then click continue.

    choose domain

    Next, select Start New Website.

    start new website

Then, select WordPress, enter your email address, and create a password. Next, click continue.

    WordPress login credentials

Step 5: Plan your website’s structure

At this point, the environment of your website is ready to start thinking about the shape your website will take place. It’s important to consider how you want your website to look and what functionality you will need. Will a one-pager do? Do you need some basic pages for a brochure type of website? Do you need e-commerce functionality? For the sake of this tutorial, we’ll go off the goal of building a brochure website.

    Pages to Consider

If you’re building a brochure website, there’ll be some indispensable pages:

    • Home
    • About
    • Contact

On top of that, depending on what the website is for, you might find yourself adding more pages dedicated to:

    • Services
    • Portfolio
    • Blog

There’s no right or wrong website structure; you’ll have to find the option that works for you, your website, and your website’s goals.

    Step 6: Choose Your Theme

Once your WordPress environment is ready, it’s time to work! When using WordPress, you have the ability to set a theme. This theme forms the foundation of your website. Based on the functionality you’re looking to add to your website, choosing the right theme is going to be an important step.

    Types of Themes

There are a variety of different themes that you can decide to go for in WordPress. The most popular themes are multipurpose and usually include a visual builder. The reason for that is the flexibility it offers. There are also themes that are specifically tailored toward ecommerce websites or portfolio websites too. Depending on what type of theme you’re looking for, you can check out different listicles with our top recommendations.

    Our Main Recommendation: Divi

    Choose Divi

We will pick a theme to work with for the upcoming (practical) steps in this tutorial. We recommend using our very own Divi for any website you build. Divi is a multi-purpose theme and includes a no-code design Visual Builder that makes building websites very intuitive. Divi comes with a wide range of features, more than 200 customizable elements, and more than 2200 professionally designed layouts that you can choose from! Whatever type of website you’re looking to create, chances are high that there’s a layout pack dedicated to that specific business exactly.

    Pricing

Divi is now ready for you to use.

Add API Key to Divi Theme Options

Next, click Username and API Key.

    Step 7: Install Plugins

Another great part of WordPress is the ability to install plugins. There are literally thousands of plugins out there to help serve different needs. Let’s take a look at which plugins you’ll want to consider for your website.

    Essential Plugins

With every WordPress website, there are some essential plugins you’ll need in order to be successful. You’ll want to install plugins for SEO, security, and other excellent WordPress plugins to help you keep your site in tip-top shape.

    SEO

WordPress is SEO-friendly out of the box but needs a little help if you want to score higher placement in the search engine ranking pages (SERPs). Thankfully, there are some excellent SEO plugins out there, like Rank Math, to ensure your site is easily discovered by potential customers.

    Security

Another vital aspect to consider is a reliable security plugin, like iThemes Security. Ensuring protection against malware, bots, and DDoS attacks is crucial. With over 44% of the internet built on WordPress, it becomes a prime target for malicious actors.

    Optional Plugins

Aside from SEO and security plugins, some optional plugins can enhance your website. Consider chat, newsletter, social media, or other optional plugins to make your website a lead-generating powerhouse.

    Chat

    best wordpress chat plugins

Customer engagement is crucial for the success of your website. You should consider installing a good chat plugin, like Tidio, to make yourself more accessible to customers. Whether you need to automate the customer experience or provide a live agent for your website, a chat plugin is an excellent way to give visitors the answers they crave.

    Newsletter

    best wordpress newsletter plugins

If you’re looking to increase leads and grow your customer base, a newsletter plugin, like Bloom, fits the bill. It’s an excellent way to grow your customer base, provide useful information to them, and track your site’s engagement.

    Social Media

    best wordpress social media plugins

Connecting your social media feeds to your WordPress website is an excellent way to increase the visibility of your website and social media accounts. Using a good social media plugin, like Monarch, you can embed your social media feeds from Facebook, YouTube, and more.

    And More

    best WordPress plugins

Whether you need a solution for backing up, speeding up, or enhancing your website’s functionality, a good WordPress plugin can help you achieve your goals. Take a look at our 31 best WordPress plugins post to give you more insight on which plugins you can use to make your WordPress website the best it can be.

Step 8: Create Your Very First Page

At this point, we can confidently start creating the pages we want to showcase on our website! This part can be overwhelming if you’re new to building websites. Although making a website is easy, it can sometimes lead to information overload. Allow yourself to process and return to the information with a fresh mind when needed.

    Add New Page

Navigate to your WordPress dashboard. Once there, hover over Pages and click Add New.

    add new WordPress page

Give your page a title. In this case, we’ll call it Home.

    name your WordPress page

You can save the page as a draft, or publish it to start working on it.

    save your page

Once ready, switch to Divi by clicking on Use Divi Builder.

    use Divi Builder

    Select Premade Layout

Divi is an intuitive tool, and you can create any page from scratch if you learn the basics. But to help speed up the process, Divi provides over a hundred website packs with more than 2200 layouts! With so many options available, you’ll find a website pack that matches your website’s needs. We release a new layout pack every week!

    Change Content & Images

Layouts are great starting points, but things still need to be fine-tuned to your website’s needs. You can go as far with this as you want. Divi is a visual builder that allows you to add new sections, rows, columns, modules, and more. It also has many efficiency features that speed up the design process.

We’ll keep it simple for this tutorial by changing content only.

    Change Copy

You can open each individual module containing copy and use the content box to change the copy. Easy!

    edit text module

    Change Images

Similarly, you can change all the images being used if needed/wanted. Make sure you optimize your images before uploading to avoid slow loading speeds.

    edit image module

    Save & Publish

You can save and publish once you’ve applied the changes you wanted to your page!

    Publish Divi page

    Step 10: Create Additional Pages

Depending on your website’s structure, you can repeat the steps above for each one of the pages you need. If you want to get your website live as soon as possible, you might consider going for a one-pager first, then slowly building the rest of your pages.

Step 11: Create Your Website’s Navigation

It’s great to have pages on your website, but if people can’t get to the page they want, we have a problem. That’s why you should pay extra attention to your website’s navigation. The navigation usually finds itself in a website’s header and footer areas. WordPress has a dedicated spot to create menus from existing pages dynamically.

    Select Homepage

Before we create the menu, let’s set up a homepage first. If people type in your main URL, they’ll land on this page. By default, the homepage on a WordPress website is set to Your latest posts. To modify this, you can navigate to your WordPress dashboard, then hover the Settings in the left-side menu, and continue by clicking on Reading.

    WordPress reading settings

Once there, select A static page under the first option and browse through your pages to find your homepage. Be sure to save the changes.

    set home page

    Create Primary Menu

Next, we’ll create a primary menu. Navigate to your WordPress dashboard, hover over the Appearance menu item in the left sidebar, and select Menus.

Click on Add a new menu and give your menu a name.

    create new menu

Continue by adding the pages you want in your navigation.

    add pages to menu

Once that’s done, set your menu as the Primary Menu.

    primary menu

And save your menu. This primary menu will now reflect on your website’s header automatically.

    save menu

Step 12: Additional Things to Consider

A website is never truly finished. You’ll always have things to improve or update. If you want to get fine-tune your website even further, you might want to consider some of the items below.

    Creating a Header & Footer

There are several ways to create headers and footers on a Divi website. You can use the WordPress theme customizer under Appearance > Customizer to style Divi’s default header and footer or use the Theme Builder to create them. We highly recommend using Divi’s Theme Builder since it allows you to create custom headers and footers using the drag-and-drop Visual Builder. To access the Theme Builder, navigate to Divi > Theme Builder.

    Divi Theme Builder

Click Add Global Header to add a header.

    add global header

You can create any header layout you want using Div’s Visual Builder.

    Creating Templates

Divi is the ultimate full-site editing theme. In addition to creating headers and footers, you can create layouts for posts, products, categories, and much more. Divi’s Theme Builder gives you the ultimate freedom to create the website you want using your creativity or applying one of our pre-designed post layouts on our blog.

    Optimizing your SEO

WordPress is already SEO-friendly, but using an SEO plugin and a good SEO tool will boost your visibility. Learn about keyword research, writing good SEO copy, and utilizing internal links. By taking these steps, you’ll become an SEO expert in no time.

    Optimizing for Mobile

Creating a visually appealing website across all devices is crucial. Google’s mobile-first algorithm prioritizes small screen-friendly websites. Thankfully, Divi specializes in mobile-first designs, giving you quite an advantage.

    Step 13: Maintaining Your Website

To have a successful website, you’ll have to keep maintaining it.

    Update Regularly

Even if it’s just for security measures, updating your website regularly has advantages. Make sure that if you do update, you use a staging site. This will help you avoid conflicts when updating WordPress, a theme, or a plugin.

    Measure Data

Consider measuring the data your website brings as well, through tools like Google Analytics. This will help you track the effectiveness of your website, depending on the goal you’ve set for your website.

    Final Thoughts

That was it for this post on how to make a website! As with all things in life, the more you practice, the easier it becomes. Allow yourself to play around with different parts of the website creation process because that’s usually how you’ll learn the most. • 8 Best WordPress Reseller Hosting Companies in 2023

The web hosting business has the potential to be lucrative. However, building and maintaining your server can be tricky and costly and requires technical expertise that most people don’t possess. Fortunately, reseller hosting is a more profitable and straightforward way to enter the web hosting market. In this post, we’ll introduce you to the best WordPress reseller hosting options available so that you can decide which one is right for you.

Most reseller hosting companies also offer good managed WordPress hosting, so you don’t have to worry about server maintenance, and they will set everything up for you. This allows you to pass on the benefits of managed services to your clients without handling the technical aspects yourself.

    6. HostWinds

best wordpress reseller hosting - hostwinds

Our next provider, HostWinds, takes a unique approach to reseller hosting. Unlike the other options on our list, HostWinds offers plans based on the number of domains you need rather than a fixed number of cPanel instances. They don’t provide white-labeling options, so your customers will know that HostWinds is the hosting provider, which could be a deal breaker. However, they do offer the most affordable solution we’ve seen for reseller hosting.

    Key Features for HostWinds:

    • Single-domain reseller hosting plans
    • Managed hosting for ease of use
    • Sofaculous for easy application installs

    HostWinds reseller hosting plans

Each plan comes with SSD hard drives, a free SSL, cPanel, Softaculous for easy application installation, unlimited databases, email accounts, subdomains, and 24/7 support as standard features. Additionally, they’ll provide round-the-clock website monitoring and automated ticket dispatch to alert their customer service engineers. On top of that, they also offer nightly backups and full server management so you won’t be tasked with server maintenance. Although their plans are per domain, they offer discounts for signing up for multiple accounts. For example, purchasing more than 20 reseller hosting accounts will give you a 10% discount.

    Best For:

HostWinds is an excellent option for those looking to start small and gradually expand their business. If you’re a beginner or have a limited number of clients, HostWinds might be the perfect fit for you. With plans starting as low as $6.99 per month, you can offer your customers the services of a reliable hosting provider for their website needs.

HostGator is a big name in value for WordPress hosting and offers the same experience with its reseller hosting plans. Every plan comes with HostGator’s 99.9% uptime guarantee. Additionally, they also provide private name servers for custom branding, cPanel with WHM, and instant installs with Softaculous. You’ll also get unlimited email accounts with up to 25 mailing lists, spam prevention, and WHMCS billing software for client management. Similarly to other providers on our list, you can white-label your hosting plans to match your branding.

    Key Features for HostGator:

    • Unlimited email addresses
    • White-label hosting platform
    • Spam prevention

    HostGator pricing

One of the standout features of HostGator’s reseller hosting plans is the ability to limit hosting packages and allocate specific resources such as disk space, bandwidth, email, and databases. This allows you to create tailored offerings for your clients, whether they require hosting for a single website or many. With plans starting at just $34.95 per month, you’ll receive a minimum of 60GB of storage, 600GB of bandwidth, and unlimited websites. Moreover, each plan includes free SSL certificates for each instance and cPanel, simplifying tasks such as WordPress installation and managing PHP, MySQL, and file manager.

    8. Flywheel

best wordpress reseller hosting - flywheel

Finally, the last on our list of the best reseller hosting options is Flywheel. As a specialist in WordPress optimization, Flywheel stands out in the world of cloud hosting, leveraging Google Cloud infrastructure to power its services. Thanks to their excellent one-click feature, Flywheel excels at launching staging sites, plugins and theme updates, and effortless WordPress installation. Plus, it’s easy to use with an intuitive dashboard to manage your site-related tasks.

    Key Features for Flywheel:

    • Intuitive dashboard
    • One-click plugin and theme updates
    • Create blueprints

    Flywheel hosting plans

Additionally, Flywheel offers a unique feature called blueprints that allow you to save time and effort when working with specific themes and plugins you frequently use. Blueprints can be especially valuable when you’ve created the perfect setup for new sites. In addition to selling hosting, you can create maintenance packages for backups, SSL certificates, and support to increase revenue.

The main drawback of Flywheel is the relatively high price point. They offer two plans – Freelance and Agency – priced between $115 to $290 per month, a bit higher than the other providers on our list. However, they track monthly visits, which could cause bandwidth problems. For instance, if ten websites receive 10,000 hits a month, you could be throttled. If you’re a freelancer with smaller websites, Flywheel’s Freelance plan may suit you, providing 100,000 monthly visits, 20GB of storage, and 200GB of bandwidth. However, if you manage more demanding websites, you should opt for the higher-tiered plan, Agency.

    Best For:

Freelancers or agency professionals will appreciate WordPress optimization, ease of use, and one-click features. That said, the price may seem a bit high for the storage offered. Flywheel may be more suitable for agencies with larger budgets prioritizing features over cost.

  • How We Boosted Our Divi Online Store Sales

This article is part 2 of a 2-part series written by the founders of Divi Den. In part 1 of this series, Kyra, my co-founder and lead designer at Divi Den, tells the colorful story of how we walked eyes-wide-shut into creating products for the Divi theme. She talks candidly about the practical lessons we learned. Many of which can be applied to your own online business.

In this second part, I write about how we tweaked and optimized our online store to keep growing and succeed as a business.

My name is Christiaan. I am the team lead and conversion rate specialist at Divi Den. Kyra and I have founded 3 different startups together since 2005. We’ve done this while traveling all over the world. Being location independent is a huge benefit of earning your income online. For our backstory and global escapades, read The Divi Den Story.

We consider ourselves extremely lucky to be able to work so closely together. Somehow, our skills are just complementary. Throw in a little bit of love and romance (we’re married) and for some people, it becomes a ticking time bomb. But not for us, it seems. I think we truly appreciate how lucky we are, and that keeps our feet on the ground.

Now that you have a bit more context, let me elaborate on our efforts to grow our Divi startup.

To bundle, or not to bundle

When we launched our first Divi product, we started from zero. Nobody in the Divi niche ever heard about us. We knew we had to put together a product that would appeal to our target audience of Divi creators.

Create a product that appeals to your target audience

Create a product that appeals to your target audience

First, you need to do your research. This is where Kyra is a master. She’s always looking out for new trends or ideas to play around with. The web is a fast-moving place. You can’t sit still for 6 months, or you’re drifting backward.

The key to doing your research is to get inside the mind of your customer. To stand in your customers’ shoes, so to speak. This can be difficult if you’re searching outside your field of expertise or interest. Instead, we find it helpful to use yourself as your ideal customer. You’ll have a better chance of success.

With this method, all you have to do is pay attention to the things you personally find interesting. What looks like good value? What doesn’t live up to your expectations? Use yourself as a benchmark.

Taking this same approach, Kyra asked, “What Divi product would I want to buy?”
And this is how we landed on the Unicorn bundle idea. Our ultimate long-term goal was to have recurring income but, you need a big enough library of layouts to make it worthwhile to subscribe.

To bridge that gap, we had to launch a Divi product bundle that would make people go “Wow”. Then keep launching more bundles until we had enough layouts, and value, to turn it into a subscription worth paying for.

    Choosing a memorable name

    Choosing a memorable name

This is an interesting topic. A great name will grease the wheels of your product in many ways.

    A great name;

    • is quick to remember (who doesn’t know what a Unicorn is?)
    • is easy to talk about (have you seen the Unicorn bundle?)
    • should ideally have meaning (Unicorns… what more can I say?)

Sometimes it can be a challenge to find a good name. Just keep brainstorming until you hit on the right name. When you hit the right name, it usually just sounds right, looks right, and reads right. That criteria might be vague, I agree. But we’ve found it to work well for us.

One last thing to keep in mind, you can’t please everybody with a name. Don’t let the search for the perfect name stop you from getting started. It just needs to be good enough.

    The importance of trust

The internet is a big place with many actors playing the game. Personally, I won’t get my wallet out if a website looks a little bit fishy. You know, that kind of half-backed website I’m talking about. We’ve all seen them. You don’t want to get lumped into that category.

If you sell anything online, you should pay close attention to how your website and business “appears” to other people. You also need to deliver on your promises. All customer interactions should confirm that you can be trusted. It should prove that you are honest and are here to stay.

    People may judge you on;

    • Your tone of voice, how you write and say things.
    • Your terms and conditions, privacy policy, and refund policy.
    • How they feel after they interact with your support system.

This is not an exhaustive list, but I think you get the idea.

    Use trust symbols strategically

Aside from walking the talk and delivering on your promises, you can add elements to your website to highlight that you can be trusted. You can define a trust symbol as anything that indicates that you are a legitimate business. It can be as simple as providing a clearly visible phone number.

    These trust symbols can help;

    • An SSL certificate to show https:// for your domain. Critical. A must-have.
    • Relevant security symbols like badges from Verisign or McAfee.
    • Real customer testimonials.
    • Customer logos. With permission, of course.
    • Industry-related membership badges.
    • Press articles talking about your company.
    • Certification badges.
    • Transparent terms, policy, and privacy pages. Another must-have.
    • A badge for your money-back guarantee.

Be selective about which trust symbols you add to your website. It should be relevant to what you’re doing or selling. If it’s not relevant to your potential customer, it may cast doubt on your credibility.

    How to think about pricing

One-off digital product sales are very different from subscriptions. With a one-off product, you need to pack in enough value to justify the price. It might add extra development time and cost, which you have to pay before you even make one cent. It also means you get the sale only once.

With this sales model, you’ll be under constant pressure to find new customers. To keep growing, you’ll need a steady supply of new products. There will be constant product launches. It can wear you down. Like we discovered in the early days of our startup.

In our case, we had no choice. Creating one-off products was the only path to creating a layout library that would eventually transform into our subscription product. We learned a valuable lesson here.

With a recurring pricing model, you’ll have less stress and more time to keep improving your product.
If you have a choice, think about how you can structure your offer for recurring income. You’ll thank me for it later. Try the keyword “recurring revenue models” in your favorite search engine. That should give you fresh ideas to build upon.

Deciding on renewal terms. Monthly or yearly?

When we launched our subscription product Divi Den Pro, we figured it was a good idea to only have monthly subscriptions. This way we would receive a small amount, each month, from many people. We thought this would improve our chances of success. If the price was affordable, we reasoned, more people would try our product and see the value in it. This was true for the most part.

What we didn’t appreciate yet was the impact monthly renewals had on failed payments. That was an eye-opener.

    Here’s a question for you

Imagine, your subscription product sells for $10 per month. Would you rather have,

    A) 12 payments of $10 each month, adding up to $120 per year?

    Or

    B) Would you rather have 1 payment of $100 per year?

Most people would probably say, I want $120 per year in 12 payments. The $20 difference, per year, could add up to be a lot of money. And you would be right. Except for those failed renewals I was talking about earlier.

Any recurring product requires a payment gateway to integrate with your online store. Services like Stripe or PayPal allow your customers to link a credit or debit card to be charged each month. Sounds good so far…

What you don’t consider is how often people’s credit cards are maxed out. Or how often a debit card is empty. With monthly renewals, you are going to find out 12 times a year. And you are probably not going to like it. Cards bounce way more often than you think.

When a card bounces, nobody wins. The customer doesn’t get the product. You don’t get paid. The support load increases. Emails are required. People don’t reply. Maybe they wanted to cancel anyway.
Maybe they want to continue, but will only have cash again 3 months from now. Could be the card expired. Perhaps, it got canceled or blocked. Now multiply the chances of this occurring by 12 months for each customer. I’m sure that $100 per year is looking way more attractive now.

    Enter yearly subscriptions

Yearly subscriptions are an effective way to limit failed payments and reduce cancellations when compared to monthly subscriptions. With a yearly subscription, customers only have to worry about making one payment per year, which means there are fewer opportunities for their cards to be maxed out or empty when the renewal comes up. This can lead to a more consistent revenue stream for your business.

To further improve the customer experience and avoid potential issues, make sure to send out notifications if their credit cards are about to expire. This ensures that your customers are aware of the situation and can take action to update their payment information, preventing failed renewals and maintaining their access to your product or service.

    Optimizing your online store checkout

    Optimizing your online store checkout

A smooth and efficient checkout process is crucial to the success of your online store. To optimize the checkout experience, consider incorporating the following:

    1. Trust symbols: As mentioned earlier, displaying trust symbols such as security badges, SSL certificates, and money-back guarantees can help establish your credibility and make customers feel more secure when making a purchase.
    2. Reduce friction: Minimize the number of steps and fields required to complete the checkout process. The easier and quicker the process, the less likely customers are to abandon their carts.
    3. Streamline the checkout form: Only request essential information during checkout, and consider using autofill or social logins to save customers time. You may also want to offer the option for customers to create an account after the purchase has been completed, rather than requiring them to sign up beforehand.
    4. Offer multiple currencies: Catering to an international audience? Display prices in the local currency of your customers and provide currency conversion options during checkout. This makes it easier for customers to understand the cost of your product, and they are more likely to complete the purchase.
    5. Payment gateways: Provide a variety of payment options, including popular gateways like PayPal and Stripe, as well as region-specific options. Offering multiple payment methods caters to customers’ preferences and increases the likelihood that they’ll complete their purchase.

If you use some of these strategies, you can create a seamless and enjoyable checkout experience that increases conversions and grows your sales. The success of your Divi online store depends on a combination of factors, including product appeal, trust, pricing, and an optimized checkout process. Keep these tips in mind as you continue to refine and grow your online business.

That’s all from me. Good luck with growing your business. Till next time.

  • Lessons Learned While Creating Products for Divi

This article is part 1 of a 2-part series written by the founders of Divi Den. Look out for part 2 coming soon.

Let’s start at the beginning and go over how it all started! On May 16, 2017, we launched our first Divi product, The Unicorn Bundle. The Unicorn was a huge success and sent us on a wild ride, with highs and lows, and everything in-between. Was it worth it? I hope my personal reflections in this article on our successes and failures will answer that for you.

For more about our background and how we got into this, read The Divi Den Story.

For those who don’t know us yet, let me give you a quick introduction:

I am Kyra, co-founder and lead designer at Divi Den. We’ve been making products for the Divi theme niche for the last 6 years. We are now a fully remote team of 6 people. Likewise, we spend our days brainstorming, designing, and doing Divi stuff.

In our time as Divi product creators, we’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons. In this post, my team and I will attempt to share the lessons we wish we’d known before we started — enjoy!

Lesson #1 – Plan for your own success

Sounds simple enough, right? Well, when we started researching the opportunities for Divi products, we didn’t think it was going to be our core business. We were thinking about a side hustle. It was all the rage about 4 or 6 years ago. Everyone was talking about it.

Your side hustle should make you extra money while you sleep. Wow, sounds awesome! So naturally, we thought, how can we also make money while we sleep? The golden egg, so to speak. We were hungry and wanted a bite. We came up with a bunch of ideas.

    The basic criteria were:

    • Make one, sell many.
    • It must be a digital product.
    • We must make it ourselves.
    • It must be sold online.
    • Recurring income ideally.

I won’t bore you with the bad ideas we came up with, but ultimately we decided to design and build premade Divi layouts and sell them on our website. At that time, we were building about 60 Divi websites per year. If there was one thing we knew how to do, it was building high-quality Divi websites. It was logical to extend that to building Divi products for other people to use too.

It was a solid idea, but upon reflection, we were perhaps too casual about how we launched it. For example, our side hustle didn’t have a name or even a logo yet. So one weekend I just stuck a heart on a shopping bag and called it a day. The thought was… “You want to buy something?” Click the shopping bag.

And now we are stuck with it. Sigh.

Fast-forward 6 years and now Divi Den is our main business along with side projects. The logo is just one way in which we didn’t plan to succeed from the start. In hindsight, we should have treated it like a standalone product with its own domain name, logo, and business plan. Sure, we were caught off guard by how successful it was, but we still could have done some basic business best practices from the start that would have made growing our side project much less painful.

Our advice: When you start something new, do it on a budget by all means but, make sure it can grow fast if there is interest. Start small but think big.

Different logos representing Divi Den between 2010 and 2021

The Divi Den logo history. Can you spot the shopping bag?

Lesson #2 – Don’t just listen to your customer — understand where they’re coming from

This really happened to me: In 2021, due to the pandemic, we got stranded in Spain. Everything is in Spanish. Even the ducks quack in Spanish. Luckily for us, we have a Spaniard on the team.

It all happened innocently enough. We had to drop off a document in town. We parked the car and Christiaan hopped out to “drop it off.” Mom and I were sitting in the car chatting. 5 minutes go by, and then 10 minutes. In the corner of my eye, I see the dreaded parking attendant. We didn’t pay for parking. We jump out of the car, coins-in-hand, to attempt the parking meter machine.

Easy right? Ha! Everything is in Spanish. We try this, try that. It’s not working! A few minutes later, in a flat panic, I text Josh, our Spanish team member, with a picture of the parking meter screen. Caption – HELP!!!

What does Josh text back to me? “Try to click on the little British flag for English.”

Oh man, the flag was right there, staring me in the face. But still, it was not obvious to me at that moment. I completely missed the English option. And here I am designing products for other people. Go figure. But that’s exactly my point. What may seem so clear to you personally, is not always as clear to everyone else. And this is the same approach we take with supporting our customers.

Support interaction is now one of the key elements in our business. It’s humbling, and I think it’s almost as important as the product itself. The key to providing good support is to be flexible. Put yourself in your customers’ shoes. Be ready to react quickly. The reason they are emailing you is that they are frustrated. They just want it to work.

Even if you get a rude email, it’s likely because the person tried to get it to work and failed. Now they have to stop everything, find the support form, fill it in, and wait for you to reply. (Still, I’m not sure how some people think being rude will get a faster reaction. In reality, it just makes you feel uneasy.) Despite the occasional rude person, we try to not see it as a problem. Rather, an opportunity to help.

It’s worse, but still, if the person gives up altogether and stops using your service — that’s a lost customer!

Lesson #3 – When people rely on you, act fast and get it done

Because we create layouts for Divi, people tend to email us first when they encounter a bug with a layout. While the whole Divi community gets excited with new feature updates, we get a little concerned. The reason is that we have more than 2500 library items to review each time a new update rolls out. And we’ve had some challenging Divi updates in the past. People rely on us. Our layouts must work as expected.

When new updates roll out, we literally stop everything. The whole team gets into bug-fixing mode. We read the Divi changelog to see if any updates might impact our designs. Then we start testing. When we find an issue, we log it, fix it and schedule it to be included in the next plugin update. When customers email support with an issue, we often provide the fix by email, before the update goes out. No need to wait for a plugin update when the solution has already been found.

    The demanding GDPR update

One memorable update was about 4 years ago with the GDPR update. All our contact forms broke. The update was sent out on Thursday afternoon, which is typically our Friday morning. We spent the whole Friday and weekend making fixes while pushing out updates as fast as possible. Contact forms are critical for every website. It must collect and send info at all times.

Our European members were most affected by this update. We even had a guy phone us. He got my mom on the phone, who had no idea what was going on, and he shouted at her. She came into the office looking a little pale and asked what was going on. Of course, we received the 5 email support tickets he sent. We already replied twice and were working on a solution. This is how it goes.

With web design, many things can go wrong. What matters is how quickly you respond and find a solution to the problem. It’s almost second nature for us now, because we’ve been building Divi websites since 2014.

    Rollback feature

In the last 5 years, the Divi updates have been smooth sailing. The introduction of the rollback feature in Divi was huge! It gives you breathing space. When an update fails… roll back baby. Such a great feature.

Right now, we are excited about the new Divi 5 update. We are thrilled there is a beta we can test, so we are confident we will be ready for this update.

Lesson #4 – Keep improving your product

When Elegant Themes launched the Divi Theme Builder update, I dropped everything to design new layouts for it. To make it available to our subscribers, we added a new tab in the layout finder of the Divi Den Pro plugin. We sent out the notification email, thinking we covered all bases.

And here we come back to the parking meter example I gave earlier. Our user interface was not obvious enough. We got a string of emails from people trying to add the library items via the normal expected procedure. Except this was not the right way to do it. With Divi Theme Builder layouts, there is a two-step process. You must first download it to your local machine, and then upload it via the Divi Theme Builder interface.

To distinguish Divi Theme Builder templates from the others, we added a colored banner to each card. We also added a link to a knowledge base article, explaining how it works. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely effective. Support emails on the topic disappeared overnight. A great result in the end because we were ready and we acted fast.

Lesson #5 – Recurring income takes time to accumulate

After the successful transition from serving web design clients to product sales, came a different set of challenges. Without a client, you suddenly don’t have creative briefs, no content or images, or anything you are used to as a web designer. This basically makes product design a bit like roulette. You have to make calculated guesses about what your future customer might want to buy.

By then we had a loyal following of people who bought all our products. We started getting feedback that people didn’t want to have to install multiple assistant plugins to get a Divi blurb from the Unicorn collection and a person module from the Pegasus collection. We realized it would be better to just combine all layouts and make them available in one plugin. This was going to be a real coding challenge.

To make our layouts stand out from the crowd, we need a bit of coding magic. It requires some custom CSS or JavaScript, and of course extra code for responsive views on mobile and tablet devices. We spent a lot of time optimizing the plugin and code delivery to be as lean as possible. Many months were spent fishing out code and CSS, breaking them up into smaller files. Then compressing them. The ultimate goal was for the plugin to detect if a Divi Den Pro module was present on a page. Then only load the necessary code for it to function as expected. Nothing more. Our coding team delivered big time.

Once all that work was done, we launched the plugin and library membership with some immediate success. Memberships require dedication and take time to grow. And you must keep producing quality work. In the beginning the income was just a trickle. With the subscription model, we lost the ability to do a once-off product launch. Things were tight in the beginning, but we kept working at it.

Two simple steps to keep your membership growing

Step one, get the member. Step two, keep the member. A lot easier said than done.

I can honestly say it took us many months to build up our customer base. While it was tough going at the beginning, we are so happy we persevered. The world is unpredictable, and it was undoubtedly the membership that got us through the pandemic. It also means I can relax a bit more. Get more experimental with designs because there’s no big pressure to launch the next shiniest product bundle that everyone wants to buy.

While trying to build up our membership in the early days, we ran only one sale promo. What a flop that was, lol. What happened was people canceled their memberships and signed up at the new lower membership price. How to sink your own ship. So needless to say, we haven’t had a similar subscription sale since.

But that does mean we have nothing for Black Friday. Christiaan (my co-founder) had the idea of selling a product lifetime deal for Black Friday. To be honest, I was not a fan of this idea. The whole point of going to membership was to not have to worry about where the next sale was coming from. But I relented, and it ended up being a great idea.

The tricky part was to try to put a value on our product. We decided to calculate 3 years of full membership and then add the Black Friday discount on top. This strategy has worked for us. We used to do regular sales with our product bundles before we started our membership. There were sales for Halloween and Labor Day. You name it, there’s a sale for it. There’s even a sale for national Unicorn day!

In the end, we realized people just wait for the sale. Meanwhile, your business is struggling with cash flow. So we now patiently wait all year and resist all temptations to have a sale. We just focus on Black Friday. This year will be our 7th Black Friday, and we already start Black Friday preparations in September. We always launch a new collection for Black Friday, 🙂 Our team typically takes off in August, so everyone is fresh and ready to tackle it.

    Enter the Divi Marketplace

In 2020 Elegant Themes launched the Divi Marketplace. We didn’t join straight away as we were unsure how it could work for us. The Divi Den Pro plugin required lots of changes to comply with the Divi Marketplace approval requirements. But ultimately, we knew we had to join to be a part of their Black Friday promo. It turned out to be a nice-added bonus each year. And it’s definitely cool to get in those extra sales.

For us, the true value of our product lies in the monthly revenue we get. On the Divi Marketplace, you can only offer unlimited yearly plans. Our product is built in such a way that it’s not practical or desirable to break it into smaller products. This makes Divi Den Pro one of the biggest products in the Divi Marketplace.

Not everyone requires unlimited sites or can pay a big sum upfront. That’s why we offer alternatives on our own website. You’ll find subscriptions for 1 site, 5 sites, and 10 sites with monthly or yearly terms. This pricing structure allows people to start small, test it out, and then switch to a bigger plan as they grow.

My advice to anyone starting out

Plan small – think big, so you don’t get stuck with a brand you don’t love. There is no gold pot at the end of the rainbow. You may have made the sale while you were sleeping, but with that sale comes support. It is your approach to support that will make or break you.

Also keep in mind, if you drastically change your core business, you should be financially prepared. We changed our business 3 times, and it always takes longer to grow than you might expect. Just keep working at it. Try not to make the same mistakes twice. And always have a plan B up your sleeve.

And remember step two, if you have a membership, keeping the member is almost as hard as getting the member. You have to consistently keep your product fresh and updated.

In closing, I would like to say a big thank you to all our members. Some of you guys have been with us all 6 years now! Your continued support has helped us grow, and for that, we are truly grateful, 🙂 Some of you we know, but to those of you who have never emailed, don’t be shy to pop into our inboxes and say hello. If you’re having a problem, please don’t struggle. We know our product pushes the boundaries.

Or if you have an idea for a layout or a module, send us a feature request. We love designing things for you.

    Stay safe folks, Kyra :=)

  • WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce (2023) — Let’s Compare

WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce are two popular e-commerce platforms available today. They both have their unique strengths and are suitable for different needs. While WooCommerce is a plugin for WordPress, Adobe Commerce is a standalone product, formerly known as Magento. They are supported by their strong communities, with WordPress users favoring WooCommerce and Adobe advocates supporting Magento. In this post, we’ll compare WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce to help you decide which platform is best for your business.

Similarities of WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce

WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce are both open-source products, meaning that the original code is freely available for anyone to modify or build on to create a customized product. The vast communities that support these products are due in part to the culture of sharing that open-source software fosters.

One of the reasons WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce have such large communities is that open-source software creates an appreciation of sharing. Developers go on to share their versions of the open-source software to carry on this aspect of giving.

    WooCommerce community

As a new business owner, using open-source products like WooCommerce or Adobe Commerce means that you can take advantage of a free initial product and the support of a large community. However, it’s worth noting that with Adobe Commerce, unless you’re willing to pay a high price or use a hosting provider with one-click installs, you’ll need a good understanding of command-line installation and coding to get the platform up and running. This is not the case with WooCommerce, which is a plugin for WordPress and can be easily installed with a few clicks.

How Easy is Set Up and Use?

Starting an e-commerce business can come with its own set of challenges, but you don’t want the platform you choose to be one of them. If you’re already using WordPress and want to add e-commerce functionality to your site, it makes sense to choose the WooCommerce plugin. This way, you won’t have to get used to a new interface or migrate your site to another platform.

However, when comparing WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce, one important factor to consider is the ease of use. While WooCommerce is easy to install and set up, Adobe Commerce may require more technical knowledge and experience, particularly when it comes to customization and advanced functionality. It’s important to evaluate your skill level and the needs of your business to determine which platform is the right fit for you.

    WooCommerce Set Up

    WooCommerce documentation

WooCommerce is a great option for beginners, even if you don’t have a WordPress site yet. This is because WordPress is very user-friendly and WooCommerce is an extension of it. There are numerous plugins available for customization through WordPress, including options from Yith and other providers. In addition, WooCommerce provides extensive documentation to help with the setup process.

    Adobe Commerce Set Up

    Adobe Commerce e-commerce platform

Adobe Commerce, being built on Magento, requires web development knowledge to get started. Like WordPress, it requires a hosting environment built on Apache or Nginx, as well as PHP and MySql. However, to install Magento, you’ll need to either use the command line interface, which may be overwhelming and frustrating for beginners, or research hosting providers that simplify the process.

Once set up, Magento’s interface is user-friendly and supported by tutorial videos and documentation. It also includes a full installation wizard. However, adding extensions to your site can be challenging, and may require the expertise of a Magento-specialist developer or personal effort.

Therefore, when it comes to ease of use, WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce is the clear winner.

    WordPress Adobe Commerce
    Ease of Use 🥇 Winner

WooCommerce is as simple to set up as WordPress, with a simple walk though set up wizard.

Unless you have strong dev skills or a host that offers set up, Adobe Commerce is difficult to install, requiring command line interface.
    Choose WordPress Choose Adobe Commerce

What are the Associated Costs of WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce?

Both e-commerce platforms are free to download and start building your shop but to grow your business, you may need more payment options beyond PayPal and bank transfers, which can cost additional fees.

    WooCommerce

    WooCommerce extensions

WooCommerce has limited basic options, so you need to buy plugins and extensions, which can add up. There are many options available, including some free ones, but if you want a unique shop, you’ll need to spend money or do some coding.

    Divi by Elegant Themes

Thanks to themes like Divi, creating a beautiful online store is easy using the Visual Builder to customize colors, fonts, and more. You can find some great child themes through the Divi Marketplace, such as Divi Ecommerce, which provides everything you need for a stunning online shop that can be set up in a matter of minutes.

    Adobe Commerce

With Adobe Commerce, you’ll find it necessary to add extensions to both e-commerce platforms, which will require additional costs as your business grows. While WooCommerce offers a wide selection of free and paid plugins, Adobe Commerce’s extensions are pricier, and you’ll need a Magento specialist to install them correctly. Additionally, finding a Magento developer is harder than finding WordPress developers.

Overall, WordPress is more user-friendly and easier for individuals with varying levels of experience, while Magento would require more time and expertise to set up and manage.

    Hosting Considerations

When it comes to hosting, it’s important to consider that while WooCommerce can run on WordPress hosting, Adobe Commerce requires more advanced hosting options like dedicated servers or cloud plans. Cloudways is a recommended provider for Magento users, and their one-click install makes it easy to set up your website. If your product portfolio grows, you may need to upgrade your hosting to ensure your website runs smoothly.

When deciding between WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce, it’s important to consider your long-term goals and budget. While the initial costs of setting up both platforms are low, it’s important to think about your future needs. Do you require the advanced features of Adobe Commerce, or will WooCommerce suffice? If you anticipate needing those features, it may be worth investing more money upfront rather than having to migrate your site to Adobe Commerce later on. Keep in mind that Adobe Commerce hosting plans are expensive, costing over $1000 per month. However, if you’re a large company with the budget to invest in it, it could be a wise choice.

    Associated Costs 🏳 Draw

WooCommerce can get pricey depending on how customized you want your online shop to be.

    🏳 Draw

Adobe Commerce (Magento) is free, but installing extensions is expensive and may required developer assistance.

    Which is Better for Customization?

Both WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce offer various customization options, but the level of customization needed will depend on your specific needs and preferences. For instance, to customize your website’s branding, you’ll need to unlock this ability through plugins or a developer’s time. It’s worth noting that being able to customize your site is only possible because both WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce are self-hosted.

On the other hand, hosted solutions like Shopify allow you to quickly build an online store, but customization options are limited. Therefore, WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce are excellent options if you want to make your e-commerce shop truly unique.

Additionally, when comparing WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce, both platforms offer extensive customization options that allow you to tailor your online store to your specific needs. The level of customization required, however, may differ depending on which platform you choose.

    WooCommerce

    WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce themes

WooCommerce has many themes, both free and paid, that let you customize your site’s appearance. You can also find themes made by third-party developers, like Elegant Themes and Elementor, that are compatible with WooCommerce.

WooCommerce supports various custom plugins, including payment and shipping provider plugins like Printify, to enhance its functionality. Developers can also use custom code and APIs to build custom integrations with third-party applications.

    Adobe Commerce

    Magento Marketplace

Like WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce offers a variety of free and premium themes to customize your online store’s appearance. However, unlike WordPress, most of these themes are created by third-party vendors rather than Adobe itself. Additionally, the Magento Marketplace provides access to over 5,000 extensions that can enhance the functionality and appearance of your store. It’s worth noting that customization on Adobe Commerce may require more technical skill than it does on WooCommerce.

Furthermore, with code customization, you can achieve incredible things on Adobe Commerce. Creating custom modules, extensions, and themes can add a unique flair to your online store.

    WordPress Adobe Commerce
    Customization 🥇 Winner

With so many third-party plugins and child themes available, there are no limits to customization with WooCommerce.

While there are extensions and themes available, they are expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, most will opt for the simple look and feel of a basic Adobe Commerce site.

    Comparing Features

With any e-commerce platform, you’ll need a shopping cart and the ability to upload and categorize products. You get these basic features with WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce. When comparing WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce, which has more features to offer?

    WooCommerce

WooCommerce is user-friendly and has basic built-in features like ratings and widgets, but advanced features need add-ons. It can also work with other WordPress plugins. The navigation is not as advanced as Adobe Commerce’s as it only allows filtering by one attribute.

    WooCommerce features

WooCommerce offers easy-to-manage extensions through WordPress plugins, some of which are free. Popular examples include Rank Math for search engine optimization, Askimet for spam filtering, and Gravity forms for creating forms.

    Adobe Commerce

Adobe Commerce offers cross-selling, up-selling, product comparison, discount codes, and advanced filters, making it a winner in this area. It also allows you to view multiple stores on the same account, which is useful for creating localized versions of your store.

    Google Analytics Integration

Adobe Commerce and WooCommerce provide Google Analytics for business success assessment and product portfolio strategy. However, when it comes to features, Adobe Commerce has the better basic features, but you’ll need to invest more to improve your site.

    WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce Alternatives

Consider Shopify if you want an easy-to-use online store without many customization options. However, if you want more control over the looks of your store, you should check out our WordPress vs Squarespace comparison.

WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce: The Verdict

Adobe Commerce is a preferred choice for larger businesses or agencies that manage e-commerce sites for their clients. It’s scalable, making it perfect for those with grand plans or an already successful online store. Adobe Commerce offers a few more basic features, and the extensions are excellent once they are installed by a developer. However, it’s worth noting that setting up this kind of store requires a significant budget.

    Final Comparison

WooCommerce is a great choice for small businesses and those with limited development experience. As your business grows, add plugins like Rank Math and Yith to enhance customer experience on this platform with basic e-commerce functionality. WooCommerce is a simple way to sell products on your website if you’re familiar with WordPress or have an existing domain.

    🏳 Draw

Adobe Commerce has advanced features for cross-selling, product comparisons, and discount codes right out of the box.

    Choose WordPress Choose Adobe Commerce

WooCommerce’s integration with WordPress can benefit those familiar with the platform. Ultimately, the choice between WooCommerce vs Adobe Commerce comes down to the specific needs of your business and your budget.
